Hakone, Japan

The place had only 8 rooms. Our room was large and comfortable. The location was a short walk to the Hakone Ropeway. Each guest had a private dining room in the restaurant. The food was good, though it did not rank as our best meal. The staff was generally friendly.

This review is considered through the lens of the cost of the room. Check-in: The check in manager was very touchy friendly. Too much so. Room: We were on the bottom floor. There is a minimal view and there was construction across the street. You could hear traffic from the road. Bath / Onsen: We were assigned an onsen that was in an enclosed room, despite the main photos showing open air onsens. There was a photo posted of this enclosed onsen on the booking page, but upon review it was taken from its absolutely best possible angle and did not match expectations. When you see the room, you are struck by the chicken wire embedded windows, the rusted colour floor, and the discoloured rocks that have build up from the sulfur water. We were able to open the windows, but there isn't much of a view when you are sitting in the onsen itself and we are taller people. Food: The dinner service is in the restaurant and not in the room. Other places on Booking.com made this far more clear, so this felt disingenuous, particularly because the room clearly was designed for dinner service to take place in the room. The staff serving us always kept saving excuse me whenever she entered and in a way that came across as sad which made us feel uncomfortable. Another staff member came over at one point during the dinner, said "Oishii?" (delicious) and we said yes, then pointed out one of the ingredients "Japanese tofu" and then left. Again, this was uncomfortable. Each dish was brought out one at a time, but it actually made the meal unimpressive. It was also a lot of soup courses. Breakfast was the better meal since all the dishes were laid out at the same time. You have to pay extra for alcohol. Overall: While already an expensive per night stay, we wish we had paid extra for a better room / onsen experience.

A great hotel with good sized, comfortable rooms in a fantastic location. The entrance lounge area feels very traditional. The hotel bath facilities were great (divided by gender / no swimsuits).

No complaints other than I prefer the Toto Washlet bidet system to the INAX bidet system they use.

great hotel, lots of facilities in the room, big room with a big bathroom (not so common in Japan), friendly staff, nice spa (women only)

If I have to say something I will mention that you have actually to get the train to get to Kyoto center (just one stop, only 5 minutes), but still if you want to stay out late you need to get a cab

Two double beds in a very compact room for 5 people is very inconvenient

It was located in SHINJUKU but a 12 minute walk from the station.

Despite a rather prestigious sounding name this hotel is incredibly compact even by Tokyo standards. Very difficult to open even a medium suit case in a double room. Exceptionally thin walls where you could hear conversations in adjacent rooms

The whole bathroom unit in the room seemed wobbly. I felt motion sickness in the bathroom.
