We chose “eco” daily cleaning and were surprised at the sloppy attention given. Pajamas thrown in the bed, bed made with sheets hanging out. Totally out of keeping with the rest of the hotel and our stay.

An elevator would be useful, perhaps a larger living room/lounge in order to enjoy the patio while drinking a beverage and probably a bigger bathroom would be considered as an asset for the hotel

The breakfast option could be better. It was a bento set from a nearby cafe. We didn’t book that but if it had been a traditional jap breakfast, we would have!

We got the deluxe suite with garden view and it was gorgeous and comfortable. Very spacious for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens). Convenient location - Walking distance to the Bus/Train station, the Old town. We walked around Takayama during our 4 days there. Lastly, the hotel was simply gorgeous! The lobby, the onsen, and the staff! We booked the onsen (2000yen/pax) which includes a drink. The toiletries provided was one of the best! Love how eco-friendly this hotel is.

The Machiya hotel was amazing! The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The room itself was spacious and was happy we got to stay at a Machiya hotel. The location is great as it is a 10 minute walk to the train station and all the main tourist attractions. Could not recommend it more!

We were given a 'surprise' upgrade to the MACHIYA HOTEL HANARE, a modern self-contained villa by the river. Location is fantastic, just 2 min from the morning market. Villa is modern with a minimalist finish & super facilities. Bedroom comes with a hinoki onsen. Toiletries were top notch. Couldn't ask for more.

It is in walking distance to all points of interest, but since Takayama is comparably small, it feels not directly in the center.

Stylish, quiet, and relaxing atmosphere, a nice fusion between old and new. Great privat bath (extra fee). Cozy room! Very clean! All day free Tea and Coffee in the breakfast room.

Room layout was slightly awkward, but that's usually the case for hotels in old buildings. Otherwise, it was spacious and the bathroom was great (strong water pressure in the shower too).

We loved everything about the house. Initially I was concerned that we were not staying in the actual hotel but in a separate location but once we stepped inside it was perfect - super comfortable and warm, an amazing private onsen, a big comfortable and well equipped kitchen/diner with great views of the river and bridge. We could walk everywhere and were surrounded by historical areas. It was safe, super clean and we even loved the tatami room and the Japanese style beds in the second bedroom. There were so many lovely touches- beautiful robes, slippers, coffee, quality shampoos/conditioners etc. Heavenly.

Only drawback was no elevator but honestly not a problem and the staff helped us with our luggage up the short flight of stairs. Don’t let this put you off staying in this lovely property.

Location - fantastic, easy walking to lots of lovely old buildings, cafes and restaurants. 100m from a little omikaze Staff - very welcoming, warm and helpful. They helped us secure dinner restaurants. Room - very comfortable and lovely view out the window of the falling snow. Comfy beds, comfy pillow and nice shower room. Facilities - warm relaxing lounge with free tea, coffee and games. For 1000 yen order the sparkling sake! Use the private bath- look out the window and have a nice relaxing soak after 20k steps exploring Takayama.
