About Assisi

Including tips for the best time to visit Assisi

Assisi is the birthplace of Saint Francis, a patron saint of Italy. This scenic town features rolling hills and verdant landscapes dotted with white-stoned buildings. With a platter full of meat-based dishes, cheese and wine, Assisi easily carves a spot in every food lover's heart.

One of Assisi's crowning jewels, The Basilica di San Francesco is the final resting place of Saint Francis. This 13th century complex comprises two churches, one of which houses the colourful frescoes depicting the life of Saint Francis. When in Assisi, do stop by the Tempio di Minerva, an ancient Roman temple, featuring six columns.

The greenery in Assisi calls for long nature walks and hikes. Mount Subasio Park is a hiking spot with numerous trails that are suitable for all levels of hikers. You’ll pass by ancient Roman ruins and orchids to reach the summit – a point that’ll offer breathtaking views of the surrounding woods and olive groves. Try visiting the lavender fields of Assisi, home to more than 60 species of the plant. The splash of purple amidst the green meadow will make you feel like you've stepped into a painting by Monet.

The culinary credentials of Assisi are best reflected in its trattorias and osterias. You can stop at Trattoria Pallotta for a plate of rosemary beef tagliata or strangozzi al tartufo (pasta with truffles). The tagliata di manzo (seared Florentine steak) – accompanied by a glass of red wine – in Osteria del Mulino is a must-have.

The town doesn't have a real grocery store, they are small with few items, so you need to buy your food in the valley below town. I was lucky to find milk for my morning coffee. Assisi belongs to the tourists, there is no doubt about that. You won't find the old way of living there, tourist restaurants and gelato shops are many. But the charm is unbeatable.

It's a fascinating city, full of history and amazing architecture. We went out of season, so it was nice and quiet but a lot of the restaurants weren't open. A lot of the roads are quite steep and cobbled, without many places to stop and rest.

Assisi was the highlight of my trip to Italy.

29 November 2024

Assisi was the highlight of my trip to Italy. After the hubbub of the Roman city life, it was so special to retreat to the quaint, quiet beauty of St. Francis' hometown. We loved the basilicas and walking in the footsteps of Francis and Clare, seeing the original San Damiano cross and Portincula, and the tomb of the soon-to-be canonized, Carlo Acutis. The restaurants were delicious, the shops full of beautiful items, and the scenery breathtaking. It was easy to get to Assisi by train from Rome. The weather in October was spectacular - clear and sunny, and comfortably warm. A must see! I would highly recommend the Giotto Hotel, which was clean and comfortable with spectacular food and service!
