They were attentive, gentle, kind...they helped us for everything we needed. Honestly, the best hotel we've never been. We loved it!

The property also provides free pick-up service from JR Takayama Station. Free shuttle bus service is available when check-in, check-out, after dinner. Where to start.. I highly recommend this place. Tai and his parents are lovely, friendly and helpful. Little Tara (the cat) was a joy to watch, playing around with her little ball as we were having breakfast. The food is amazing, the common area very laid back, a place to enjoy a cold beer next to the fireplace. Tai happily drove us to the city centre and gave us several useful recommendations for restaurants, places of interests, onsens,... The room was spacious and the futons comfortable. The showers and toilet rooms were very clean and well looked after. It's a quiet area, a place to truly relax and use as a base for exploring the surrounding area 😊

Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. The property offers free WiFi access in rooms and in public areas including the shared TV lounge and the terrace. We loved our time at Auberge Hidanomori. The decor is beautiful and in a lovely location in the outskirts of Takayama. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who gave us recommendations for some local walks and provided a free shuttle to/from town. We would definitely recommend booking in for dinner - the food was incredible and the best that we had during our trip to Japan. We hope that we will be back again some day - thank you!

Located just a 1-minute walk from popular Miyagawa Morning Market in the heart of Takayama, Sumiyoshi Ryokan offers homely Japanese-style accommodation in the historic townhouse building. Free WiFi is available at the lobby and guestrooms. This hotel was selected as one of the Top 25 B&Bs and Inns in Japan by TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Award 2015.

Rooms are fitted with tatami (woven-straw) flooring and traditional futon bedding. A low table and a TV with satellite channels are provided. Guests can relax in the room with free green tea. Hosts are incredibly kind and gave us a warm welcome. The ryokan is very traditional. The japanese breakfast was amazing and we regret not to have booked the diner (it has to be 3 days in advance and when we saw how the breakfast was made we understood why, so make sure to book it). Location is very close to shops and restaurants. If you have a car, the host will guide you to parking spaces in the adjacent street. The ryokan has 2 onsen like baths shared among customers. Note: there are no private shower or toilet in the rooms.

Guests can relax at the traditional garden and enjoy night views of the city from the observatory. A billiard table and table tennis facilities are available for guests to spend their time. Set amid a beautiful landscape in Okuhida Onsengo hot-spring area, Yamazatonoiori Soene offers beautiful rooms in a Japanese style with river or garden views. The property is 80-munite bus ride from JR Takayama Station, and Fukuchi Yurimizaka (HO41) bus stop is a 3-minute walk away.

Guests can relax in the indoor and outdoor baths with its natural hot spring water. Kashikiri (private baths) are also available and can be reserved for free. This place was incredible. I cannot write enough good things about it! The service was above and beyond (even relative to the generally high standard in Japan). The food was delicious and plentiful, and the whole place was so serene. There are three onsen options - a "regular" public one, three private ones on a first-come-first-serve bases, and an outdoor public one with incredible views of a waterfall. We visited all three and all were great. We never had trouble getting one of the private ones when we wanted to, and the others weren't crowded either. The staff and waiters were very helpful and accomodating, and the whole experience was thoroughly relaxing. Worth noting that a short walk (maybe 5 minutes) from the hotel is the start of a hiking trail with amazing views (a good way to fill the time between soaks ;) ).

Located in the centre of Takayama Historic District, Ryokan Tanabe 旅館田邊 is one of the most historical ryokans in the city. It features Japanese-style rooms and free WiFi in all areas. Guests can request relaxing massage treatments or soak in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, which are made of rocks and cypress wood. the staffs are very friendly and helpful. the onsen is just great. very nice place to stay
