Due to this position, I can imagine that this room is very quiet even in the main tourist season. We visited Matera in November, there where a few people but it was very enjoyable. Excellent breakfast and kind, welcoming staff. Recommended.

Set inside the Matera Sassi area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palazzo Degli Abati offers unique rooms carved in the rock or in a 18th-century building. This family-run property with free Wi-Fi offers panoramic views of the city. Amazing stay here and did not want to leave! Lovely welcome on arrival explaining the hotel, the local area and showing us our former family home called ‘Pignattid’. The room was large, beautifully furnished and tranquil due to the natural soundproofing. A stylish bathroom and comfortable bed. Breakfast was fantastic with a tasty self-serve buffet all beautifully laid out in the bistro on-site. The view across the valley is fantastic and the hotel is an easy 15-minute walk from the railway station (albeit with lots of cobbles and some steps). The staff of the hotel and bistro were exceptionally helpful, friendly and personable. We spent half an hour chatting to Valentina in Reception after arriving back from our walk and Cristina organised our private tour with Alessio (recommended) and was quick to arrive when the safe got temporarily stuck.
