Firstly, the food is superb and the best we had in Iceland, both the breakfast and the restaurant for lunch and dinner. It is worth coming for the food alone. The location is remote and spectacular. The hotel is very comfortable and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming. There are a lot of cool things to do in the area, we particularly enjoyed walking to see the fascinating ancestral history and art of Páll Guðmundsson, a short walk across the way from the hotel, which really captures the magical earth energy of the locality and the nearby stone canyon. Then of course I must mention the thermal baths attached to the hotel, which are wonderful and free to use for guests. There is also a northern lights wake-up call on offer, and we saw the lights twice. Do not hesitate to come here, we will definitely be coming back!

Stóra-Vatnshorn is located 500 metres from the historic Eiríksstadir site and 17 km from Búdardalur village. It offers holiday houses with free WiFi access, private kitchen facilities and lake and mountain views. We stayed in one of the wooden cottages at Stóra-Vatnshorn and really enjoyed the peaceful setting. It was so quiet, with just the sound of a stream behind the cottage, and the view was beautiful. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed for our stay. It was a bit cold when we first arrived, but it warmed up quickly once the heating was on. The cottage is accessed by a gravel road. An ideal getaway for peace and quiet.
