How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Location inside city centre- everything walking distance. Apartment very homey and comfortable. Really enjoyed our stay. Host gave us step by step directions with pictures which really helped :D

Nothing not to like - everything spot on. Couldn't fault anything.
Spotlessly clean, well equipped and comfortable apartment. Well thought out and everything you need for a city center break. We arrived early and the host allowed us to access the property early - this was appreciated as it meant we could leave our bags and start exploring York straight away.

Mattresses felt thin and could probably do with an upgrade (although we all slept well) Extra sofa/comfy chair space in living room would be useful. 4 of us did fit on sofa but kids are only 11 and 8 - any older and would be a squeeze. An instruction manual would be good for things like how to use the oven, washing machine, dishwasher and where to dispose of rubbish.
Fantastic location - short walk to all of main attractions. Lovely to have lots of space for downtime with the kids. Very clean. Bedding and towels were all very fresh and smelt amazing. Washing machine useful for longer stays Cleaning materials, toiletries, tea coffee all provided.

The mattresses were flimsy. The kitchen implements were minimal, and not many/matching glasses. and there wasn't even a corkscrew supplied, until we bought one and left it for future guests. My husband was disappointed there was no cafetierre (which isn't always expected but rare it's not supplied). The website also mentions robes are included but they were not. The lights over the mirror in the ensuite were not working, and in the main bathroom, only 2 small lights worked.
The location was exemplary. Right in the heart is a very fitting description. It's a fabulous area. The apartment was clean and attractively decorated. I would stay there again as the price was also good.

Stairs down to the bottom floor very steep. Large hole in the wall as you enter the building. Appear to be student flats, there were some peculiar smells. Inside the flat. The toilet roll holder in the en-suite bathroom was broke. The bed’s were extremely uncomfortable. Mattresses were flat and thin, you could feel the divan bed base underneath. Did not get a good nights sleep because of it. Pillows were amazing and firm which is rare for a non chain hotel/flat.
Location of the property was brilliant. Facilities inside the room were great. Underfloor heating in bathrooms felt amazing. Tea coffee facilities etc were great. Fully functioning kitchen if you’re planning on cooking.

Bit hard to get to if your foreign but I’m not good with maps and landlord was AWESOME had pictures to help you :). Landlord thought of everything even supplied washing machine detergent, great towels, mattress a bit worn but was only there one night. Really good to deal with and really spacious.

Just wish it had parking outside the apartment , but saying that the Castle car park is only 5 mins away , and it's very safe to park over night ,
Spotless apartment, about 50 yards from Xmas market and pubs , we will definitely be renting this apartment again ,could find no fault at all , so pleased with everything .

The apartment was truly in the heart of York. Which allowed us to get to the Christmas Market, all the major stores , and pubs. We did love the Christmas tree, which was put in the lounge. Great place to stay. Would and will book again.
