Minor Gripe with the Tv remote not working.

The room appeared to have been recently refurbished with new carpets ,shower and furniture which was welcome, overall appearance of the hotel seemed a lot cleaner compared with my last visit.

We have stayed at the Union at least 6 times now and always been satisfied with the the service and staff. Always feel welcome and nothing is to much trouble. We love that each of the rooms we have stayed in have art works by different artists.

having a lift would have been a lot better but the age of the hotel unfortunately dose not allow for one

We booked breakfast which was excellent and also had two evening meals while staying which was also excellent.

The Shower fitting was old and did not work properly with the result that it was impossible to get a decent shower. The bathroom was big enough to have an up to date shower cubicle installed while leaving the existing bath as is.

The bath and shower arrangements were sub-standard. Lots of stairs to climb. The property is past its best but could be incredible with some TLC. We were there in a relatively warm, humid period. In room air on would have improved the experience.

Lots of character and history. Great view from the room. Excellent breakfast and lovely staff. Great location within east walking distance of all amenities including train and bus station, pubs, restaurants, parking and shops. Opening window in the room made a big difference.

Charming old hotel in a great central location. Room of average quality given the price point.

The hotel is characterful with plenty of faded elegance but accordingly is quite tired. Our room was large but the beds were past their best.

Central location is great for all local amenities. Staff were very good and the breakfast excellent. Onsite parking was very convenient for a town centre hotel.

The staff were amazing, so accommodating and helpful. The building is beautiful but run down and thread bare in places. Even so the staff keep it clean. The owners need to replace the main hallway carpet or see if the hardwood under can be refinished. Wifi is sporadic and weak.

    • Leisure trip
    • Solo traveller
    • Double Room with Sea View
    • Stayed 4 nights

    As above

The room was not very clean and it was quite dated, curtains wouldn't close on both windows, they were stuck on the rails, one of the wall lights didn't work above the bed, also I would have expected a bath for the price of the room. Breakfast was quite basic. Assistance to help me with my luggage to the top floor would have been nice. However, the staff were very friendly and helpful, good parking facilities, very central location and the views from my room were stunning.

The TV was on the small side, though it functioned well. The shower was in the bath and I prefer a separate shower. It was an electric shower, not in itself bad, but I could not get it to give water at a constant temperature. It cycled between too cold to too hot and back again. I had to time when I stood under the shower and when I stood back. I liked the hotel, but it's tired and needs a major refit and decoration.

Clean, friendly and helpful staff. Extraordinary comfortable lounge and Waterloo Room with wonderful paintings in both. Good beer.

There is not much we didn't like about this hotel. As mentioned, the Car Park could be an issue, but not for us, as we got there around 1/2pm. The only downside, which was not the hotels fault was the noise from some drunken people. As we had a room at the front and on the first floor (with the window open) we heard some fairly 'fruity' language!! If you are a light sleeper, I would suggest asking for a room towards the rear of the hotel.

The bar was very comfortable with great bar staff. We had a snack at lunchtime and dinner before going out, both were well presented and were good value for money. The breakfast was very good. It was freshly cooked and was delivered within the time I would have expected. The location is perfect for exploring the town. The Car Park can get full, so make sure you get there as early as you can. The Car Park is around the back of the hotel - Check Google Maps!

The room we had had a sea view, which was really appreciated. Liked everything and would definitely stay here again if we are every in the area and need an overnight stop
