The location was great, not far from the town centre but situated in an area steeped in local history. The building itself is everything and more from a structure of this age, bags of character, pitch black timber beams, mottle and daub walls and a period 'walk in' fireplace. We had booked a family room which was in fact a self contained arrangement of 2 separate rooms, a small landing area with tea and coffee making facilities and two armchairs. Both rooms were decorated with interesting period prints and paintings. Towels were ample in quantity and very soft. The beer was well kept (Harvey's Best Bitter), the atmosphere in the bar very inviting and calm. The bar staff - friendly and efficient. The breakfast was superb and with generous portions. The owner served us and was most friendly and considerate.

Everything was thought of and the friendly, helpful staff were always quick to respond to queries and requests. Full English breakfast (all the food, really) was fantastic. The history and charm of the building are unmatched. Be sure to ask for a tour of the medieval crypt below the inn, which had been part of a monastery associated with the 1180 church next door. Fires in the fireplaces warm and charm, making the public rooms cosy and welcoming in the winter. A function room on the second level is used by locals for a weekly choir practice, which is quite wonderful and demonstrates how much the neighborhood loves the building. However, we couldn't hear anything from the rooms on the third floor. Handy to a bus stop and a next-door grocery. Would absolutely stay again.

Close proximity to a variety of things, from the pier 30min walk, and town centre 20mins. Tour of the pub’s very interesting background is also available + well stocked bar, and food is fantastic.

The lighting in our room as it was quite dark and difficult to see properly.

The family suite was excellent. Very clean. Extra touches like the fridge and fresh milk each day made us feel very welcome. Was not expecting a room clean after 1 night. Excellent value for money. Two separate bedrooms. Completely unexpected.

We have stayed at this property before. Natalie and her husband do a fabulous job creating a real home from home atmosphere. The personal touches in the bedroom, biscuits, good tea and coffee, fridge with water and fresh milk, lovely toiletries far exceed what you would expect from a pub. And the food in the bars is excellent as is Natalie’s lovely cooked breakfast!
