I would 100% recommend a stay here. We were visiting Durham for the universities' open day with our 2 children and are so pleased we booked to stay at The Avenue. We will definitely be returning again in the future. The rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. We booked in for dinner here also, which was all really lovely and well presented. They had a fantastic pianist playing live music, which just added to the already friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Our son Frankie was also allowed to get up and play a few songs during the break where all the staff and local residents were so supportive. This made our night. The staff were all truly fantastic and could not have been more accommodating and friendly. To top it off, our breakfast was delicious! Thank you to the landlord Rich and Claire for such a brilliant stay. I'm sure we will be seeing you soon. The Currans

The bedroom had a couple of safety hazards the roof rafters were low & the bed legs were chunky & the bathroom door was broken so could not close it but every thing else was fine.

The appearance of the pub inside and out is very clean & warming the owners & the bar staff are very pleasent & helpfull the atmosphere of the regulars are relaxing & friendly, the room was spacious & the bed was comfortable & a lovely breakfast look forward to returning soon.

Parking on road , but managed to do so under our window , used coffee mugs left in room on arrival ( replaced on request) and bathroom could have been a bit cleaner - I’m sure a minor oversight ,

Lovely pub, great atmosphere , quiet residential location - very friendly accommodating staff, good food , rooms were basic but comfy and did the job , bed especially , slept well, we loved the pillows! Dog friendly and happily would stay again

The only negative thing I can even remotely think from our stay was the bed, you could sometimes feel the seam in the middle where they joined two smaller sized beds to create the king size bed.

Room was spacious and clean. The staff was friendly and courteous. They kept us informed when they were having work done and the water would be turned off allowing us to properly plan our day. I loved the breakfast in the mornings, were able to select what time we wanted to have it served in the dining area downstairs. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay and will be recommending this inn to our friends. Easy to get to city centre from here, bus stop located directly across the street. Petrol station located up the main road about half mile. I stopped by the morning of check in and the staff were able to hold on to my suitcase prior to check in which was a plus. Check in was a breeze and paid for our stay at the bar.

Great little place to stay with rooms above a cosy village pub with a great community atmosphere and in a lovely residential area of Durham. Snug double room with ensuite. Very comfortable bed and pillows with white linen. Hot power shower. Good quality teabags in room. Hot cooked breakfast and evening menu available. Friendly and polite staff available at all times should you need them. Parking is available and free off road. Close to Durham City. Other pubs and country walks nearby. Great value for money. Visiting parents with kids at uni might like as near many colleges. Another bonus - it is genuinely dog friendly.

Whilst it is personal choice, we found the bed to be overly soft. We are more used to sleeping with a mid to firm mattress. On the upper floor, the dividing walls between rooms are very thin and not well insulated against noise. The couple in the adjoining room wdere doing nothing more than talking but their voices carried through the party wall.

Ideal location for our needs. Plenty of free car parking either in the adjacent car park or on street. Friendly and accommodating staff. Tasty and enjoyable breakfast. Good value for money.

Couldn't really find fault. It could probably do with a lick of paint, but given the very reasonable price we weren't expecting 5*facilities.

Staff were lovely, very welcoming and bent over backwards to be helpful. We had a very comfortable night, and a great sleep. Although the accommodation is over a pub, it was very quiet. It was also immaculately clean, and the food was great.
