Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyNothing really-all excellent, apart from the price. But Islay overall is very expensive due to the limited supply and I admit Dhar Urlar was one of the very few we could actually afford.
Loved everything but above all the fabulous hosts. Breakfast was aplenty and excellent. The room was very comfortable, the beds very good and comfy to sleep in the bathroom spacious and with walk-in shower AND bathtub. The common areas are well furnished and all have big windows with amazing panoramic views - if the weather allows. The night sky has minmal light pollution so the star studded sky is amazing. The host also offers help with wiskey tours. The hostess is most delightful, both a very welcoming and chatty, making you feel at home. As a German I was particularly impressed by being greeted by the host in fairly good German. As the property is almost in the middle of the island, its ideal for exploring the whole lot. I can also recommend the PeatZeria in Bowmore for Dinner, excellent.

The hosts were extremely accommodating and cooked us the most amazing breakfast in the morning. The whole stay really enhanced our stay on the island. Would highly recommend.

United KingdomNo real down side or complaint as such just if you are allergic to duck down pillows some of the pillows may be down filled.... ask.
Situated about a mile from Bowmore it is literally in the middle of nowhere with open 360 beautiful views on clear days you can see both Northern and Southern Ireland and Jura from the various windows. It is a standalone B&B, Jimmy, Caroline and son Archie live next door. You have the use of the house there is a comfy sitting room and nice kitchen dining area used for breakfast, cooked fresh by a combination Jimmy, Caroline or Archie and are an excellent spread. Fresh fruit cereal yogurt to start with followed by a hearty full breakfast cooked with your choice of options. With toast and whiskey(what else) marmalade which is very good. The rooms are all spacious with on suites and showers one has a bath as well (snuck a peek before the others arrived). Everything is very clean, The only thing to be aware of for allergy sufferers some of the pillows appear to be down Filled. We didnt get our rooms done or fresh towels but to be honest wasnt an issue, I am sure if we had asked it would have been done as our hosts go out of their way to make an enjoyable trip. Jimmy is a character and chats and is happy to impart his love for the local area and knowledge and also runs a taxi service which is quite handy and we used him a few tikes to get into and back from Bowmore when we couldn't be bothered to walk. But like everything else on the island the pace is steady, laidback and peacefully and works on Jimmy time. But great place great service run by a really nice family.. See you next year Jimmy. Just to show the extra mile they will go, we arrived at the time with a couple who had flown in from Vancouver, they tried to find somewhere to eat but most places stop serving at 8pm. So Caroline drove into Bowmore to get them fish and chips so they got food. Nice touch.

United StatesThis was a great find. The hosts were warm and welcoming and very knowledgeable about the island. Large, clean rooms, beautiful views and outside deck and terrific breakfast. The location was great as it was in the center of the island so easy access to anywhere on the island.

United StatesJim is quite a character, while being an enjoyable ambassador of Islay and Scotland. Both he and Caroline are quite friendly and outgoing, and go the extra mile to make guests feel quite welcome. We really enjoyed having proper whisky glasses available, and the extras such as a cozy den and the outdoor deck. Breakfast was wonderful and complete, made to order. We very much enjoyed our stay there.

CanadaWe enjoyed our stay very much. The hosts were very hospitable with hearty breakfasts. We weren't able to rent a car on Islay and in the end, we are very glad about that. One of our hosts, Jim MacCalman has a taxi/tour guide company and we enjoyed his knowledge and love of Islay - and his humour - for two days of touring. We saw, met people and learned things that we would never have learned on our own. His care of us was excellent! Thank you Jim!

United StatesHosts Jim and Caroline are wonderful. We felt so warmly welcomed to Dha Urlar and Islay from the moment we arrived. Jim has a wealth of knowledge about Islay and loves to share his knowledge. Jim’s taxi service was terrific for the day we had distillery tours scheduled. The house and our room were very comfortable. The location is a mile from Bowmore, allowing us to have a nice walk after dinner. We loved our time at this property.

Located next door to the owner’s home - Caroline and Jim are available if you need info etc but otherwise you feel you’re in your own pad 😃 great bedroom and a very nice guest lounge, complete with fridge for your evening tipple. Breakfast is cooked to your own specification and served up in the lovely kitchen /dining room area. There’s a seating area outside to contemplate the stunning views. United KingdomCan’t make a comment here as was lovely, although when booking, remember it’s a little remote, just a little outside Bowmore. But, jim offers a taxi service.
Caroline and jim were the most welcoming of hosts, very knowledgeable about the island , jim offers a taxi service if needed and the breakfast cooked to order was just lovely. Clean and comfy accommodation. Peaceful and relaxed with views across the fields to the sea just amazing. Also nice is jim saying he’s only a phone call away if you need anything at all while exploring etc. nice touch . Will be back 👍

United KingdomIt's not a dislike, but just to note that the b&b is outside the town of Bowmore down a single-lane road so if you are driving be careful and aware (or it's a 25 minute walk into town). We are glad we brought eye masks as the curtains are not black-out, and in the summer the sun rises quite early!
Caroline and Jim were wonderful hosts - friendly, welcoming, and had helpful recommendations and tips for our visit to Islay. In fact, they tipped us off on the morning of our departure that our ferry departure port had changed! Our room was spacious and very comfortable, with a sizeable ensuite bathroom. Comfortable guests' lounge as well. Jim's breakfast was superb, and the stories and overall hospitality even better. It is located just outside Bowmore, which means it was nice and quiet at night with views across the countryside. Free parking right outside the front door.

AustraliaSome lining on the drapes would give guests a chance to sleep past sunrise and provide more warmth in the colder months.
We loved this property and Caroline & Jim are very welcoming hosts who live next door. Their breakfasts are so great with everything cooked to order. This property has its own guest lounge which is very relaxing and there’s a guest fridge for storing your food too. Endless hot water for your shower. Bed extremely comfortable.

PhilippinesMy husband and I visited Islay to attend the Fèis Ìle 2023. We chose this property so we can also have the chance to experience local living. My husband and I are blown away by the beauty of the house and the serenity of the place. What made our stay exceptional was the warm welcome and hospitality extended to us by Jim and Caroline. Jim, who also operates a taxi service and private tours, all the more made it convenient for us to go around the island and visiting distilleries. Sharing his love for the island and knowledge about whisky further deepened our experience. We highly recommend their place and Jim’s transport services.
