Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe location is great but the square is very lively until the wee hours of morning. Even with the sliding glass door closed, we could still hear the noise from the street and even other hotel guests. So this isn’t the quietest hotel. We had a king-size bed which was quite firm so we didn’t sleep well. The bathroom was clean and modern though the shower smelled a little musty. The lifts were small. There was a rip in the carpet fixed with duct tape which gave me the impression that the hotel needs a bit of an update.
Excellent location in the old city in the Grassmarket Square. There are lots of pubs on the cobbled-stoned square, and hotels and lots of history here. It’s a very lively area with street musicians too but not as heavily used as the Royal Mile (half block to the north), so this is a better location. Directly off this square is the diagonal Victoria Street for the Harry Potter fans—all the shops are super cute and there’s a Harry Potter themed museum. In the other direction, there’s a small supermarket, the college, and more historical areas. So there’s lots to see and do from this hotel, no car needed. The hotel itself has a modern look and feel. The staff is international and very friendly, helpful, and attentive. We chose a Castle View Deluxe Room with Balcony, the view of the castle from our room was astounding! The interior was clean with simple décor. They offered a welcome letter, a gratis bottle of red wine, Nespresso machine and kettle are provided along with cups, instant coffee, herbal and black teas, and biscuits which are replenished daily along with the glasses and cups with the daily housekeeping service. The bathroom was large. The shower and tub were separate. Cotton weave bathrobes and slippers. Towels were soft and fluffy. The toiletries were high quality. The included breakfast was buffet and order off the menu. The buffet was Scottish breakfast along with cold cereals and fruit. Off the menu I had the smoked salmon one day and the smoked kippers the next—both were wonderful. The hotel also offers a swimming pool. It also offered a dry sauna room which we enjoyed. There are changing areas, showers, and lockers in the pool/sauna area and the hotel will provide extra towels if needed.

FinlandMaybe a little noisy at night due to pubs in the area. Couldn’t get the room service to work with the QR code on the menu (but calling worked and food was great!)
Location is simply the best - get a room with a view to the castle. Close to restaurants and everything in Old Town.

NorwayThere was nothing to dislike, nothing whatsoever
The location was brilliant, right on the charming Grassmarket with bars, restaurants and all the sights close by. The staff were friendly and helpful, and everyone, including the receptionists, the staff in the restaurant, the staff in cleaning as well as those who seemed to work in the hotels administration were all so smiling, polite and welcoming, and contributed in creating an atmosphere of comfort and homeliness. Last, but not least, the breakfast was amazing!

United StatesThe room was just okay. Didn’t like the bathtub—would have preferred a walk in shower. The bathtub was pretty high, so I wouldn’t recommend for elderly people.
The location was perfect—right in the middle of everything.

CanadaThe staff were super helpful after I had a fall on the street. One woman receptionist brought me an ice pack unsolicited. The view from the room was great. The room was very comfortable. The best part was the staff.

United KingdomI enjoyed everything about the hotel
The location was perfect for our stay in Edinburgh. They were able to keep our bags when we arrived earlier than check in. Hotel staff were friendly and on hand to help. We did not get breakfast at the hotel but the area breakfast was served looked bright and open. The rooms were warm and the beds cosy.
