I had to do a lot of research for Cat Ba, and finally, this was the best choice. The room was great! It was very clean and quiet, the bed was comfy and we also had a nice view! The bathroom was also super new and had everything we needed. The breakfast was not the typical buffet, but still, they had different choices. The cappuccino was the best I had in Vietnam! I also had a sandwich for lunch and it was very good! The staff was super friendly they have a tour agency downstairs so it was also useful to reserve some activity with them. We also had to request laundry service, and it was very efficient in one day. The location is also the best as in the centre and on the main road.

Excellent staff that would go the extra mile to help. There were a few western breakfast options and cooked fresh. We had a room.with a ocean view that was beautiful. The hotel is a 15-25 minute walk out of town, which we liked to get away from the noise but should be considered.

Beautiful clean room, a spacious closed shower, free breakfast and easy scooter rental. This place was amazing. Also, Nam is the man. He helped us with the scooters, planning visits, booking the boat tour, booking the bus and the hotel to Cao Bang. A one man army. Bonus points for the cute little dog chasing people's ankles.

Cat Ba Dream Hotel overlooks the waterfront esplanade and the bay of Cat Ba, it is quite majestic. The room is large enough with a big window to capture that majestic view. Bed is large and comfortable for a good deep sleep. I had originally booked a "high floor" but that did not guarantee us a view, so I had to upgrade to get the view, well worth the few extra $s. Booked a cruise and a cheap motor bike and the forward bus journey to Ninh Binh. All good experiences at Cat Ba Dream Hotel.

The location, how all the huts were recycled plastic and put together in such a clever and pleasing to the eye way and most of all the family were fantastic hosts. We needed to get to Hanoi to catch a flight and they organised a super fast, super clean transit via coach, speed boat and taxi with the minimum of fuss! Would definitely recommend this stay. What a view from the pool as well!!!

Cat Ba’s a proper little adventure — all dramatic limestone cliffs and buzzy harbour life. The national park is stunning, if you don’t mind a good hike, and a boat trip round Lan Ha Bay is an absolute must. The town itself is a bit scruffy and touristy in parts, but in a likeable, no-fuss kind of way. Loads of decent grub about, especially if you fancy fresh seafood. Not the polished resort experience, mind — it’s more backpacks and beers than poolside cocktails. But if you’re after brilliant scenery, easy boat access to the islands, and a laid-back vibe, it’s spot on. Just pack your sense of adventure and some trainers. Well worth a few nights.

A lot of ports, so there are a lot of big trucks transporting containers. I felt a little dangerously on my motorcycle in Vietnam traffic. But it is true, that 70 km per hour is all you need. A lot of seafood. The lane cabin was by far the best part, you have a nice view around and you can enjoy hills on the other side. Easy way from Hanoi. Haiphong is near and big enough to let you eat and drink all the night.

There is a big building development in the old harbour, but the beaches are in wonderful bays unaffected by the works. There is also a great bus in the town at night and great restaurants. Lots to see and do, and easy to arrange 1 day or 1/2 boat tours of the amazing archipelago.

Hai Pong is very interesting and clean city. They have a very lovely big park with plenty of beautiful tropical trees for shades. The walkways are always being swept of leaves. Very wide and easy to walk around. People are very friendly and helpful. Few Cafes around park areas and very pleasant to sit and people watching. On the weekend they have plenty toys for the kids to ride on and very bright and entertaining during the night. Place still have a nice pleasant vibes that is Vietnam is known for. Easy to get around can walk in the park all the way to their famous Cau Tre Canal. Don't forget the Banh My Cay which is Hai Pong is famous for.

Coming back to Viet Nam after spending most of my life in Australia always feels a bit surreal, and Cat Ba ended up being one of the highlights of this trip home. I was born in Viet Nam but grew up mostly in Sydney, so every time I return, I’m half-tourist, half-local. Cat Ba captured that mix perfectly — familiar in some ways, but still full of surprises. The island itself is stunning. The mix of limestone mountains, quiet fishing villages and that incredibly calm, green water hits different when you’ve been away for so long. I’ve travelled around Australia quite a bit, and while we’ve got beautiful beaches, there’s something special about cruising past those karst cliffs at sunrise — it reminds you why this part of the world is so unique. What surprised me most was how easy everything has become. Tours, transport, even food options — all way more organised compared to years ago. But the local vibe is still there. I had seafood on the waterfront that tasted like something straight out of my childhood, and the island pace is nice and slow in the best way. That said, it’s not perfect. Some parts of town get busy and a bit chaotic, especially around the main pier, and service can be hit-or-miss depending on where you go. But honestly, that’s all part of the charm if you’ve got the right mindset. After living overseas so long, I’ve learned to take it in stride. All up, Cat Ba was exactly what I needed — a bit of nostalgia, a bit of adventure, and a reminder of where I’m from. If you’re a Viet-overseas kid like me coming back to reconnect, Cat Ba is absolutely worth a few days. It made me feel both at home and on holiday at the same time, and that’s pretty hard to beat.

Most travelers skip Haiphong. This is a mistake. If you travel to eat, don’t skip Haiphong. The food is interesting, delicious, varied and exceptional. We had the best Pho here that we’ve had in four trips to Vietnam. The people of Haiphong are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The city center has a lovely park running through it. The old colonial architecture is rundown in places but interesting to look at. We stayed out of the old city in a modern development, but would stay in the center next time even though GRAB and the city bus are easy to use.
