They offered their car park to us for the next two days while we went to Stewart Island to save us ferry terminal parking fees. They kept a bag for us. They offered their (closed) dining room to us to eat our takeaway dinner in and again for our own (brought-in) breakfast even though they did their own charged-for breakfast. All of the foregoing with no request for payment.

United StatesThere wasn't anything we didn't like about this property, the management or the location. A good getaway spot. We lucked out with sunshine and warm weather. In stormy weather, this spot might be quite a different place.
The bedroom and bathroom were immaculate and well-appointed. The room had stunning views and we did book the room for the views.
We hiked a part of the trail and enjoyed the remoteness of the area. We ate at the Oyster Cove Restaurant next door. It offered a simple menu and the dishes were well-prepared. It does close early so call ahead to reserve.

One of the best stays of our two week drive around on the South Island. Room was great and staff was exceptionally helpful and friendly. In room breakfast was great and delivered hot and right on time. Would recommend to anyone as a great place to stay. Buster Crabs restaurant was right across the street which made for a great addition to the stay.

Very nice place a little uphill. You wake up by the Sound of the birds. Excellent pick-up service from the ferry with short introduction tour in Oban.

We love coming here, though perhaps not during the height of...
We love coming here, though perhaps not during the height of the summer holiday season. We have been to Te Anau many, many times (including during the closed borders, which we loved, to be honest...).
Te Anau is one of those small towns that predominantly caters for tourists. But there are two types of tourists: those who take the well-known trips to Milford and/or Doubtful Sound, whether guided or unguided, and, of course, the many hikers. Fiordland, as a rule, offers some of the best hiking in the country, and the town definitely caters to both groups.
Unlike Queenstown, however, Te Anau does have an "off season" as most of the overnight hikes (Milford, Routeburn in particular) are closed during the winter months, and the Milford Road might also be closed periodically during snow events. That would be our preferred time to visit—fewer People.
Also, Te Anau recently hosted the famous South Sea Spray festival. As Southlanders ourselves, we are familiar with this and travelled there especially to see all the fantastic new murals. It is a nice distraction to "hunt" for them.

Walking from Stirling Point to Bluff Hill is challenging but great. Shopping is good. Love E Hayes gift shop and the new mall, small but great. Bill Richardson Transport and Motorbike Museums are great

Beautiful spot, excellent walks & good meals at The Church. Come prepared for cold weather and rain and bring your own supplies from Te Anau. The Doubtful Sound cruise is, of course, not to be missed.

You don't need to spend money on tours if you don't have it...
You don't need to spend money on tours if you don't have it (I never do), as there are plenty of beautiful walks to discover for yourself. Ulva Island is a must, though!!! The bird life is amazing, and even though at home we have plenty of kereru, piwakawaka, bellbirds, the song and sight of these guys over there is next level. Kereru, walking or sitting on the ground, is not seen in cities. Do take sandfly spray as these wee guys are also very friendly 😉

You are close to the start of the humpridge track which is the best of the NZ great walks i have done ( I've done 5 of them)

I was in Gore for the Tussock Country Festival and the Gold...
I was in Gore for the Tussock Country Festival and the Gold Guitars. I had a great time, the various events were very enjoyable and the people very friendly. Plenty of choice for dining out and shopping, plus the Eastern Southland Gallery is a "must-see".

This is a warm, well-appointed and charming but...
This is a warm, well-appointed and charming but unpretentious accommodation that suited our needs as 'passing-through" visitors. It was ideally placed in our swing through Southland and Central Otago to catch up with friends in various locations over this region. I should add that we booked here because we had few other options brought about by changes in itinerary that meant we were searching for somewhere suitable with only a day's advance notice! All in all, we were very happy with our choice. We cooked our own meals on perfectly adequate facilities.

Am SO glad we decided to stay in Bluff! We met the most wonderful, kind, generous authentic people ever!! We had the most fantastic two days here - was well worth coming and staying in the Foveaux Hotel with owners Mike and Pam was just fabulous - so authentic and gorgeous. We will be coming back to Bluff to see the wonderful people we met again!

Quiet little town between Queenstown and Milford Sound.
Quiet little town between Queenstown and Milford Sound. Room rates are very reasonable; and the attached resturant was very good. The lamb shank was excellent! Fun place to hang with the friendly locals. It is a good 3 hour drive to Milford Sound from here (not the 2:15 the GPS will say) so you need to leave extra time if you have a boat tour scheduled. Mossburn is a good place to gas up your car before leaving for Milford Sound or Queenstown. Our room had a large attached bathroom, and the shower had great water pressure. Secure parking located behind the building gave easy access to the rooms.
Don't be afraid to go to Milford Sound if it's raining; the waterfalls are even more spectacular!

Lovely little township as a launch to the great walks in the district. Very tourist friendly and easy to get around with a great variety of restaurants and shops , including supermarkets and adventure clothing stores. Beautiful snow capped mountains and gorgeous spring days in November.
