Mike and Pam were absolutely brilliant hosts: knowledgeable, attentive (without being intrusive). They gave us the feeling that nothing was too much trouble and were helpful, friendly and wonderful from start to finish. The hotel is right next to the Ferry Terminal (literally across the road if you’re going to Stewart Island, Rakiura), there’s a little Four Square Supermarket a couple of doors down for all the essentials and some great choices for dinner if you’re around in the evening. The beds were lovely and comfortable. Linen was immaculate and excellent quality and the hotel has some brilliant original Art Deco features and character, plus a bar and lounge to relax after an days adventuring!

Te Anau is a quaint village on the lake with beautiful alpine scenery. Easy to get around by foot. It’s an ideal spot to relax before and/or after travelling to Milford Sound. The downside is that I didn’t stay long enough!

Worst motel we stayed in in the entire New Zealand trip of 1...

Worst motel we stayed in in the entire New Zealand trip of 1 month. Liked · The view over the lake - NOTHING about the facility. Disliked · The room was very old and dated, wallpaper peeling off walls, a single bed sheet on a double bed, linen was grey coloured and felt grotty. The 2 chairs were sagging in the middle, one chair at a desk, 1 coffee mug, 2 cups and 1 saucer, 3 wine glasses none matching - 1 was a 1950s glass, fridge was not turned on - 1 bowl and 1 spoon. No milk and 2 tea bags. The bathroom was terrible, both the vanity basin and toilet bowl ceramics were so old they were crazed, the shower over an old bath with no rails to hold to get in and out of. To top it off 3 dead blow flies in the vanity cupboards. The roof of the verandah threatened to blow off and kept us awake wondering most of the night! The staff were backpackers and couldn't have been less helpful. The restaurant and bar are closed. I would never stay there again! All this for AUD $185 grossly over priced for the facility.

You don't need to spend money on tours if you don't have it (I never do), as there are plenty of beautiful walks to discover for yourself. Ulva Island is a must, though!!! The bird life is amazing, and even though at home we have plenty of kereru, piwakawaka, bellbirds, the song and sight of these guys over there is next level. Kereru, walking or sitting on the ground, is not seen in cities. Do take sandfly spray as these wee guys are also very friendly 😉

I was in Gore for the Tussock Country Festival and the Gold Guitars. I had a great time, the various events were very enjoyable and the people very friendly. Plenty of choice for dining out and shopping, plus the Eastern Southland Gallery is a "must-see".

Yummy meals in the local pub bistro, great beach down the road and a well stocked superette ( small supermarket) Funny and slightly rude t shirts and other souvenirs on sale worth a sausage theme! You are close to the start of the humpridge track which is the best of the NZ great walks i have done ( I've done 5 of them)

Quiet little town between Queenstown and Milford Sound.

Quiet little town between Queenstown and Milford Sound. Room rates are very reasonable; and the attached resturant was very good. The lamb shank was excellent! Fun place to hang with the friendly locals. It is a good 3 hour drive to Milford Sound from here (not the 2:15 the GPS will say) so you need to leave extra time if you have a boat tour scheduled. Mossburn is a good place to gas up your car before leaving for Milford Sound or Queenstown. Our room had a large attached bathroom, and the shower had great water pressure. Secure parking located behind the building gave easy access to the rooms. Don't be afraid to go to Milford Sound if it's raining; the waterfalls are even more spectacular!

This is a warm, well-appointed and charming but unpretentious accommodation that suited our needs as 'passing-through" visitors. It was ideally placed in our swing through Southland and Central Otago to catch up with friends in various locations over this region. I should add that we booked here because we had few other options brought about by changes in itinerary that meant we were searching for somewhere suitable with only a day's advance notice! All in all, we were very happy with our choice. We cooked our own meals on perfectly adequate facilities.

The obvious starting point for your Milford Sound experience...

The obvious starting point for your Milford Sound experience., Te Anau has the look, feel & scenic beauty of a Canadian Great Lakes Town but all set in Southern New Zealand. Te Anau is surrounded in Alps & beautiful Blue Lakes making the scenery very easy to digest. There's everything you need here in the shape of accommodation, bars/Pubs, restaurants, shopping, supermarkets etc. Chill out for a few days of Te Anau tranquility before taking on the crowds & traffic nonsense of Milford Sound.
