Everything. We were in the older part. There is a living room and separate bedroom. It’s huge. The biggest space we’ve had on our journey. Spotlessly clean and has everything you could possibly need. The easy chairs may look a bit bulky and ugly but they are really, really comfortable. And there’s a balcony as well. The view over the lake is lovely and it’s about a five minute walk into town. And the gardens are beautifully maintained

We love coming here, though perhaps not during the height of the summer holiday season. We have been to Te Anau many, many times (including during the closed borders, which we loved, to be honest...). Te Anau is one of those small towns that predominantly caters for tourists. But there are two types of tourists: those who take the well-known trips to Milford and/or Doubtful Sound, whether guided or unguided, and, of course, the many hikers. Fiordland, as a rule, offers some of the best hiking in the country, and the town definitely caters to both groups. Unlike Queenstown, however, Te Anau does have an "off season" as most of the overnight hikes (Milford, Routeburn in particular) are closed during the winter months, and the Milford Road might also be closed periodically during snow events. That would be our preferred time to visit—fewer People. Also, Te Anau recently hosted the famous South Sea Spray festival. As Southlanders ourselves, we are familiar with this and travelled there especially to see all the fantastic new murals. It is a nice distraction to "hunt" for them.

Beautiful spot, excellent walks & good meals at The Church. Come prepared for cold weather and rain and bring your own supplies from Te Anau. The Doubtful Sound cruise is, of course, not to be missed.

Lovely little township as a launch to the great walks in the district. Very tourist friendly and easy to get around with a great variety of restaurants and shops , including supermarkets and adventure clothing stores. Beautiful snow capped mountains and gorgeous spring days in November.

Worst motel we stayed in in the entire New Zealand trip of 1 month. Liked · The view over the lake - NOTHING about the facility. Disliked · The room was very old and dated, wallpaper peeling off walls, a single bed sheet on a double bed, linen was grey coloured and felt grotty. The 2 chairs were sagging in the middle, one chair at a desk, 1 coffee mug, 2 cups and 1 saucer, 3 wine glasses none matching - 1 was a 1950s glass, fridge was not turned on - 1 bowl and 1 spoon. No milk and 2 tea bags. The bathroom was terrible, both the vanity basin and toilet bowl ceramics were so old they were crazed, the shower over an old bath with no rails to hold to get in and out of. To top it off 3 dead blow flies in the vanity cupboards. The roof of the verandah threatened to blow off and kept us awake wondering most of the night! The staff were backpackers and couldn't have been less helpful. The restaurant and bar are closed. I would never stay there again! All this for AUD $185 grossly over priced for the facility.

We drove our hire car from Queenstown and stayed just the one night as we had a Tour booked the next day on the boat. We enjoyed the drive and the stunning scenery on our trip to Milford Sound; however, if you are short on time, you can FLY straight out and do the Boat cruise in half a day. If you drive down- it's an ALL-DAY event and that is why we opted to stay overnight and travel back to Queenstown the next day. There is only a CAFE in the town for quick food and coffee etc... There were limited places to pull up on the trip to have a meal. Lots of scenery and a long drive but enjoyable if you like car trips?

Te Anau is a quaint village on the lake with beautiful alpine scenery. Easy to get around by foot. It’s an ideal spot to relax before and/or after travelling to Milford Sound. The downside is that I didn’t stay long enough!

Staying in the Sound is special - it is a very short drive (minutes) to the cruise departure points. It's about 2 hours drive otherwise from the closest town to the national park. You are immersed in the environment and you need to be flexible in regards to weather - we had several road closures (can't leave the park), rain and significant snow fall at the Homer tunnel area. The Lodge did a good job of communicating the various conditions.
