One of the swimming spots in Amsterdam is located just round the back!

IJmuiden is really just a container port and lacks any kind...
IJmuiden is really just a container port and lacks any kind of facility for solo travellers or families. Okay there are the dunes and the North Sea coast to explore but there are plenty of more pleasant places I would choose to stay along that coastline. I found one little restaurant / take away place with a bar near my hotel where I was made to feel welcome but that was it. The town centre was a mess with various building works all over the place and there is of course the scenic view over the container port to the steel works. I'm sorry to say but the only saving grace about IJmuiden is that Amsterdam is a minute bus ride away and Haarlem about 20 minutes. I've stayed in many places in Noord-Holland but this one will be memorable for all the wrong reasons.
