The most professional service we've encountered on our Laos travels. On arrival, we got a lift by the owner from the boat to guesthouse and received a warm welcome. The room was just spectacular - grand view of Mekong from the balcony (sunrise over the river definitely worth waking up a little earlier!), large bed and bathroom and the best toilet we've encountered in all Laos. The guesthouse has a restaurant serving delicious Lao, Asian and Western meals and staff was very helpfull and friendly. In addition, the town of Champassak is so nice, clean and green - a pleasant change after Vientiane, Pakse etc. If you're visiting this area, Nakorn Guesthouse is highly recommended!

Perfect stay! Wish we could have stayed longer. The owner Andy is super helpful as are his staff. Great rooms, well worth the price. Daily house keeping and bottled water, string air-conditioning, great views from the room and unusually for SE Asia, extremely comfortable beds. A buffet breakfast, with omelette/ egg station is served everyday on the stunning terrace, with plenty of freshly ground Laos coffee, juices and fresh fruit. Watching the sunset on the bar terrace (I think also open to none hotel guests), was one of the highlights if our visit to Don Det, by far the best place to watch on the island with a bottle of Beer Lao. The location is perfect, walking distances to bars and restaurants. Launday service also available. Will definitely return!

I enjoyed that everything was in walking distance.

I enjoyed that everything was in walking distance. The local people are very nice and helpful. The local food was delicious, and the environment was a relaxing atmosphere. If you get lost any local would help you with directions or even take you to your destination. Pakse had many Buddhist monuments that you can walk into and explore and take pictures. Wonderful little city would like to come again.

Suitable for backpackers with lots of time and a chill state of mind. Getting there is not easy and there's really not that much to do once on the island other than just chill. I came during "high season" yet the island was still pretty empty. It's a great place for couples or groups of friends arriving together, not so much for solo travelers.

This is a sleepy town set amidst rice fields along the meandering Melong river. It is the perfect place to relax. Easy to get around by moped or motorbike. There are a couple coffee houses, a few local handicraft stores, and a lovely French hotel along with the fantastic River Resort. The location is perfect for exploring the ancient Wat Phou Temple, book a guide to explain the details. It is also a jumping off point for the 4000 islands.

A still very authentic village on Mekong's largest island.

A still very authentic village on Mekong's largest island. There is nothing much to do, but this is the village's special charm. You sit in one of the lovely restaurants along the Mekong, you let your gaze wander over the river any you watch the fisherman. The pace in this village is very relaxed, people are very friendly and all you have to do is to relax as well. I highly recommend you to visit the morning market at the edge of the village. It is very special and you should come very early, at around 6 am.

I loved the zipline over the Tad Fane Waterfall. It was definitely worth the money. The waterfalls are a bit far away from each other on the loop. The sunset from the Buddha on the hill or from the side of the Mekong river is just magical.

I was in Champassak during the Wat Phou Festival which was great and interesting and then returned for one night after being in the 4000 Islands before heading north. The Temple are marvellous and would like to see it without all the tourists and festival goers but I enjoyed the festival particularly the opening and the Alms Ceremony for the monks. We went down the Wat Oum Tomo by a small private boat - a 2 hour trip each way around the island, but it was well worth it. Champassak is peaceful and encourages relaxation although I found bicycling in the rice paddies gave me insight into country life. My most vivid memory is sitting by the Mekong and watching the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen over a river that was as still as glass.

This is a quieter location than the more popular southern islands of Don Det and Don Khone. What I loved here is the quiet, less garbage and less tourist jadedness of the locals which I experienced on my visit to the southern isles. One day I rented a scooter and rode around the whole island and really enjoyed it! If your aim is the waterfalls, kayaking, and lots of tourist facilities, this might not be the place for you. However, you can get down to the waterfalls from here by private boat which takes about 1.5 hours and a beautiful experience as well.
