I appreciated that the separated bath rooms with open air did not require any reservations. The free icecream and mango pudding were also a very pleasant surprise. The decor was very nice and everything was very clean.

This hoteI is new and very clean. The owner of the hotel is a very nice and very helpful. I can see the beatiful view of the mountain from the window of the hotel. The private onsen is very impressive. I got lost because my GPS doesn't work and I got there late at night. Fortunately, I brought the phone number and the name of the hotel in Japanese. The owner is so nice to come to pick me up and take me to the hotel safely.

We had a fabulous time at the hotel soaking in the private onsen. The room was huge and so comfortable we loved spending time there. The hotel itself is like a museum of modern art beautifully designed. Best having a car if staying here as it isn't in the city centre or near a conbini.

Auberge Koyama is a delightful place, recreating the rustic charm and comfort of southern France on Kyushu. We had 2 wonderful nights which included delicious meals in the French style prepared with great skill and attention using local seasonal produce. The host and his mother offer gracious and generous hospitality and we felt welcome and cared for. We enjoyed their company immensely and would love to return. We highly recommend a stay here to others. Location is excellent if you have a car.

The rooms are huge. Those who have travelled around Japan would know that most hotel rooms are the size of a shoebox, but this had more an apartment / western hotel feel. The room has a two seater couch, a 70” TV, two king single beds, a wet room featuring a hot tub (with jets), a dedicated toilet, automatically retracting black out blinds, adjustable beds, stand-alone AC, mood + automatic lighting, fridge, convection oven, and a well equipped bathroom (which included a Dyson hair dryer). I stayed in two rooms, and they were essentially identical. Located a short drive from a Family Mart and McDonalds. Free off-street parking. Quaint eating area for breakfast, although meals look like they are prepared offsite. There is a service balcony in the rooms you can access if you’re a smoker, but you wouldn’t spend time out there.

Lovely spot with a very nice owner! They have two onsens that you can book and use for free, a ping pong table and a great outdoor space. I guess you need a car to get there. They didn't serve dinner but you can use the refridgerator and they sell some drinks, snacks and noodles. We felt very welcome and it was extremely clean. I wish we could have stayed longer.

We had a great experience living here. Everything is perfect, the food, the bath, the room and the service. We really enjoyed the view when taking the bath in our private room. The food is delicious, we have tasted so many different Japanese dishes. We strongly recommend Sanso Tensui!

If you want to really feel like you are within an "onsen...

If you want to really feel like you are within an "onsen town", this could be the best in all of Japan. The view from the castle has you looking out over countless steam stacks, each indicating a spot with an onsen. Natural hot water flows through all of the city's drainage. Everyone seems to be relaxed and moving just a little more slowly. The whole city smells like an onsen right when you leave the train. It is a surreal city to be in and definitely worth visiting if you are spending any amount of time in Kyushu. The best onsen is "Hyotan Onsen", it is near the "7 Hells" and is something I will remember for my whole life!

Such a cute town with a ton of character and really exceptional local businesses. Even though it’s rural we had very upscale experiences at a local bar (Bar Stir) and sake tasting room with a foot bath inside!! I would have loved to stay longer!

Not a great deal to do or see in Oita.

Not a great deal to do or see in Oita. The castle ruins holds some interest. A very friendly man in a temporary office in the car park helpfully explained more about the castle and it's moats. Could use Oita as a base for visiting Beppu if you can't get accommodation there By train it's only 280 yen and 12 minutes away.

We visited in the off season, so not much was going on, although we knew that and it was all right. Onta Yaki Pottery Village was a terrific day trip, although we did have to take a long taxi ride to get there. We loved the friendly, humorous, laid-back style of the people in Hita - really lovely folks!

Japan is packed full of Forest & Mountains 70% and has a long Coast BIG big cities middle ones and some small towns and villages in the off valley‘s eg SAIKI has on the streets around WASABI Hostel as it is called so by locals I was singing with Karaoke March is not a highlight season therefore it wasn’t packed like the popular ones

Beppu has a lot to offer.

Beppu has a lot to offer. Our highlight was Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden. Watch about 900 Japanese macaques roam freely and interact with one another. They come down from the mountain, and you are in immediate proximity with them. A very ethical 'zoo'. We spent 2.5 hours there in amazement. It is set in a beautiful environment.

Morning walk along the waterway when there were not many tourists was peaceful and enjoyable. The are lots of small shops on the main street, but might be too crowded to enjoy. The shops close around 5pm. My favorite eating place was Pizzeria Kunugi no Oka; good food and good view of the Yufu city.

I loved this town and could easily live here.

I loved this town and could easily live here. I was lucky enough to catch Ukai (cormorant fishing on the Mikuma River while enjoying a dinner cruise). It has a laid-back vibe, with some excellent dining options close to the station. Unfortunately, I ran out of time to spend more time in this beautiful town.

We loved three destinations in Beppu - Firstly, 'The Hells' - 7 natural hot springs bubbling out of the Earth - in different, natural colours, depending on the mineral content! Spectacular! Secondly, the Kunisaki Peninsula. Takes a day to drive around or book a tour (operating only on Saturdays and Sundays). (Leaves from the train station.) Well worth it! You can book it via the Tourist Office - at the main rail station. Thirdly, take an ordinary, public bus (from the train station) up to Yufuin - an hour, picturesque trip, well worth it! Gorgeous mountains to see, and walking in the valley, up there - to a nearby, pretty lake.
