This place is so characterful, and well worth breaking our usual diet of hostels/homestays to experience! Especially in winter, when you'll be spending more time in your accommodation in the evenings (and perhaps not wanting to brave the weather to get dinner), just being here is an experience to add to your itinerary. Reading a book or enjoying a whisky in the historic lounge is a must do, especially in the quiet winter months. The staff were also very attentive and accommodating. By the time we arrived, we were extremely tired (our travel was disrupted by a storm), so we were quite indecisive, and not up for a rich meal that would delay us going to bed. They suggested adjustments to their menu items to make us a light dinner instead, and it worked out perfectly. Come invoice time, it hadn't cost much more than the original starter, either! The staff at breakfast were just as good.

What a fantastic stay! Hotel is in a great location, rooms are extremely comfortable and reasonably priced! Meals are locally sourced and super tasty! Staff are great but the star of the show was a chap called Scott! His service was impeccable! So polite, always smiling and so handsome! A true gentleman.! A fantastic breakfast chef ( makes delicious scrambled eggs!!) breakfast was a great atmosphere listening to him singing away, what a voice!! , a real home from home! His service in the restaurant in the evenings was just the same, being so kind and attentive to everybody no matter how busy he was. And then to see him throughout the day attending to guests, cleaning, even weeding the hotel grounds! A fantastic all rounder and a true credit to the hotel. I will definitely be returning to the Brae hotel! A real hidden gem! Well done Scott and Curtis

Beautiful town.

Beautiful town. Fascinating center with so many beautiful alleyways. Safe. Picturesque. Walkable. Friendly people. Many businesses open late and close early. Most restaurants open in the afternoon for a few hours. Very windy. Great and easy bus transport withing town or other parts of the isand.

i was quite shocked at how little shops and restaurants were on the island, we did go on the 28th December until 2nd January and the majority of the shops in Lerwick (the capital of Shetlands) were closed until 6th January, there were very limited restaurants open, so cooked at home in the lovely rental property that we had. There were 2 pubs (but not what you would expect as pubs) in Brae and a CO-OP and a leisure centre, thankfully the CO-OP was open all the time, and there was a Chinese take away that was open and a fish and chip shop that was closed. The pace of life is slow, if you don't mind cooking for yourself, its a great place to go, if you like eating out, then its 23 minute drive to Lerwick........but remember Scotland has a ZERO TOLERANCE to drink driving, so NO ALCOHOL and driving what's so ever, so you always need a nominated driver or Taxi, which would be tricky i would expect. Overal a nice chilled out trip, although if the property wasn't as good as it was, you could be counting down the days in the winter months

Great access to Muckle Roe, must see destination; lovely home cooking with farm fresh ingrediends (the lamb is a must); generous size, renovated room with modern bathroom; reliable regular bus service to other places in Shetland for those with backpacks, the isolation from town is a bonus, so relaxing; helpful and friendly service

Parking was easy. View of the water.

Parking was easy. View of the water. Inadequately heated - very cold. Refrig and micro dirty, soiled frying pan. Poor communications from owner. After informing him of the above he left and never came back. I left after 1 night of an expected 4 night booking. A disappointing experience. I slept in my clothes and coat to stay warm.

Lerwick has so beautiful views.

Lerwick has so beautiful views. The town is a typical Scottish 1970s town. We visited in Mid October and found many of the eating places to be closed for a holiday. Most of the shops are closed on a Monday and a Wednesday. Lerwick was easy to park and walk around.

Twin room, bed comfortable pillows fabulous, warm, very very basic. Poor pressure on hot water, very small towels absolutely no frills at all. Breakfast options many if you like fried English breakfast, we didn't and we're told we couldn't have poached egg nor scrambled. Had the fried English options only once as tasteless, could do much better here. Suggest: providing free toiletries, upgrading to Andrex or Cushelle, providing large bath towels, improving hanger situation very old fashioned, and buying better ingredients and cooking less rather than piling on the fry up so a better start to the day, we didn't bother with breakfast after the first one. Evening meals weren't impressive either, though last night better than had been. Fish and chips across the road is a must. Missing lots of opportunities to upgrade.

Shetland Islands in four days was not enough (especially as one day was very wet and we couldn't do much). Scalloway is a great base: easy to travel into Lerwick and to all parts of Mainland Shetland.

A nice clean hotel situated on the waterside.

A nice clean hotel situated on the waterside. Very good staff who operated well under covid restrictions. The food was good and we enjoyed all our meals. Not gourmet food but good. Excellent selection of whiskies to try and a well balanced wine list.
