Location, location, location, right on the water front overlooking the harbour with views of distant islands. An easy walk from the CalMac ferry terminal, hop on hop off bus, and well stocked small supermarket. Starter breakfast supplies were very handy.
Could have sat looking at the view forever.

Stunning location with views across the sea to the mainland.
Stunning location with views across the sea to the mainland. It was very wet when we arrived but we still managed a windy walk along the promenade. There are a some very good cafes in the town, in particular The Kettledrum cafe, right on the prom where we had a very tasty lunch and a delicious cake! The Victorian Toilets, right by the ferry terminal, are also worth looking at (if not occupied!). Fabulous tiles and mosaic floor.
We had a great circular walk from Rothesay the next day, along part of the West Island Way, to two of the inland lochs with distant views to the mountains of Arran. All in all a great little trip!

The slow pace of life a quiet village, with a lovely sea view. You can walk along the sea front sit on a bench and watch the boats and ferries coming and going into Rothesay itself just breathtaking.
We visited Ardencraig gardens and aviary which have beautiful flowers that are well maintained The aviary has a variety of small birds are delightful to watch.
We saw the Standing stones that can be reached by car or bus.
A hop on hop off bus tour is also available on the Island.

Views and walks from Kilchattan are stunning. It’s not a crowded village but has a lovely coffee shop right next to the beach and just a short walk to the Kingarth pub/hotel.
A great place for bird watching and safe for swimming.

Great cottage and facilities for those of you who want to...
Great cottage and facilities for those of you who want to escape busy life and traffic of the mainland and enjoy making your own entertainment. If you enjoy your own company and the outdoor life then this is for you. Small island. Easy to get around by car and appears to have better bus service than mainland. Shops mainly centred around Rothesay. Can't speak for dining out but didn't appear to have much choice of quality restaurants. Does have a great butchers in Macqueens and main co-op has good selection of most things including off licence. Some nice quality individual shops but need to look for them.
Mountstuart House and Gardens is a MUST See if you haven't already been.

Castle and museum were both very interesting.
Castle and museum were both very interesting. Unfortunately I travelled in October and Mount Stewart house was closed for the winter season. Town has a couple of nice bars and restaurants and is very easy to navigate. Plenty to see and do for a short stay.

Port Bannatyne is 2 miles from Rothesay.
Port Bannatyne is 2 miles from Rothesay. There is a small village shop and one community run pub. The only cafe was not open during our stay, so we had to drive back to Rothesay to get something to eat. Very few pubs do food and there's not many places available to eat in the evening.

Perfect location with incredible views and amazing cottage. We will all be back again soon. We are in Ghillies and Harry Has both had excellent food. Isle of Bute is an amazing part of the country we particularly loved the beautiful Ettrick Bay beach. The local people were warm and friendly.

Rothesay is a dump.
Rothesay is a dump. And I say that as someone who used to live 2 miles up the road. But you don't go there for the town. You go their for the sea and the beaches and the views. All of which aren't in Rothesay. In the winter it's really only Ettrick Bay that's accessible unless you have a car. But in the summer take advantage of the hop-on, hop-off bus tour which gets you to some really interesting places. Not many places to eat out in the evening, so be prepared.

Port Bannatyne is beautiful and so peaceful.
Port Bannatyne is beautiful and so peaceful. Absolutely stunning views and really comfy bed, The only thing I would suggest to improve facilities is that a better hotplate for cooking is needed, as the one provided only had one plate working. I knowmost people don't cook on holiday though and there are loads of great places to eat on Bute.
The pubs and cafes are fantastic and I'd particularly recommend the Post Office at Port Bannatyne, Callows in Rothesay for home baking and breakfast and the Galatea for a great night out and fantastic live music.
