The remote beach location is everything you can wish for if you need a good rest in a paradise-like location. Palmas beach was one of the nicest we've seen on this side of the island, with a restaurant in front of the accomodation which is part of the same family run business. The staff was super friendly and helpful, food delicious (even though you run out of new options after a few days of eating there the whole day), breakfast was superb, and daily room cleaning was included. The room and bathroom were spacious and nice, despite the lack of AC.

Even before I had arrived on Ilha Grande, Fernanda would always help me out with any questions I had regarding the island, with the boats and tours etc. She picked me up from the pier and from the first second on I felt happy - the room was filled with light and had an amazing view from the balcony with the hammock. It was very clean and towels etc were provides, which were changed on a regular basis! :) And: the breakfast - oh it was fabulous. There was fresh fruit, cakes, scrambled eggs, coffee, freshly squeezed juices, different kinds of bread, jam, cream cheese, butter, good coffee, joghurt and cereals - she even made me tapioca on the last day (delicious!). It was always enough to keep me full until dinner (food is very expensive on the island!). Thank you, Fernanda, you were an amazing host :)

The location a few minutes walk from the main pier in Abraao facing the ocean. Beautiful views from the the terrace. Comfortable king size bed and spacious room. A bit pricey compared to other properties at Ilha Grande but it was worth it.

FAQs about hotels on Ilha Grande

A Little Piece of Paradise

An unspoilt island of lush landscapes, pristine beaches and turquoise seas, Ilha Grande sits in the Atlantic Ocean to the south-west of Rio de Janeiro. Popular for hiking, its interior is mainly mountainous and covered in rainforest that is home to endangered species including the maned sloth and brown howler monkey. Offshore, whales and penguins can be seen and exotic fish swim in coral reefs.

The majority of the island is a designated state park, which also means that no cars are allowed, so practically all Ilha Grande hotels are by the beach. Well, we say ‘hotels’, but most of the accommodation is actually in pousadas (or guest houses).

The majority of these are in the largest town Vila do Abraão, beautifully located in a bay protected by green headlands either side. Found here are the state park visitor centre and a small harbour - the arrival point for ferries from Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba on the mainland of Brazil.

Other Ilha Grande pousadas are located by the stunning Araçatiba, Manguaraquissaba and Matariz beaches on the west of the island. On the northern coast the tranquil beaches of Camiranga, Pouso and Praia das Palmas also have Ilha Grande accommodation surrounded by greenery.

It is not easy to travel to the Ilha Grande (Abraão) from Rio de Janeiro city. But, by arranging an appropriate transportation (coach/van and ferry/boat), the trip can be very smooth. There are no cars in Ilha Grande, thus people with some disabilities (or any mobility problems) may struggle. From a short (1.5 km), Praia Preta is a nice visit where ocean and a river meet -- very enjoyable for the little ones. Also, a tour around the island, although a bit expensive may be worth.

Saco do Ceu is a very well protected bay.

Saco do Ceu is a very well protected bay. I traveled there in my sailboat and did not worry about the boat being safe at night. Nice muddy bottom for anchoring and protected from the wind. The trail around the bay is a nice walk although a flashlight is needed at night is some areas. The restaurants have excellent food and great menu choices. The East side of the bay has a nice little beach. The West end is a tidal flat but has a long dock for securing your dingy.

Getting around Abraão is easy on foot, but to explore other beaches you’ll need to hire local boats for day excursions, as cars are not allowed on the island. Dining was a highlight—everything we tried was fresh, tasty, and affordable. Lua e Mar and Petra, both with beach seating, made perfect bookends for our first and last days. A note on getting there: Abraão and Ilha Grande are truly gorgeous, but the trip can be long—especially when traveling with a young child. Coming from Foz do Iguaçu, we flew into Rio (GIG), then took a private car to Angra dos Reis followed by the Flexiboat. This was the fastest option from the airport, yet it still took about four hours door-to-door. On departure day, the return trip plus a long wait for a late-night flight made the journey feel endless. It’s worth factoring this in when planning, as the travel time can be tiring.

This stretch of beach was very peaceful, and only a minute or so from Poussada Tropical. At times, it felt the beach only had us on it. Poussada Tropical is the place to recharge your batteries. The meals were cooked from scratch, with fresh ingredients and with very generous portions. Andrade lives and breathes his poussada and his guests benefit from this. Bravo and much luck to Andrade and his team.

Abraão is a great place, no cars, no pollution, it's the perfect place to spend some time away from civilization. As being a very popular place expect to be packed with tourists every day, all day long. I booked a few days in October and I was right in one way - the temperature was lower than the average... But it WAS PACKED with tourists coming and going from the mainland every day. Hundreds and hundreds suffocating the island and I was one of them. I don't know how long it will take the locals to react in the same way as in Europe....
