Lovely location on the river and a pleasant walking distance to the middle of town. We got a lovely room in the silo part. Comfortable, clean, with lovely little touches like local products. Staff were all helpful and friendly. Archie the Silo dog was such a treat to have around and the best boy! We would recommend this to all our friends visiting Launceston.

FAQs about hotels in Tasmania

Laidback Island of Incredible Landscapes

Perhaps most famous for the deceptively cute-looking Tasmanian devil, tranquil Tassie, as it’s affectionately known, boasts some of Australia’s most impressive landscapes.

Most 5-star Tasmanian hotels are in its historic capital Hobart, a beautiful city cascading down slopes towards the sea. Its highest points offer far-reaching views towards the bay’s lush islands and headlands. The furthest headland shelters Port Arthur, a former convict colony touted as Australia’s answer to Alcatraz.

Just outside the capital is Richmond, home of Australia’s oldest bridge. To the north-east is Swansea, across Great Oyster Bay from the Freycinet Peninsula, site of stunning Wineglass Bay.

Bicheno has a sweeping, sandy beach, while St Helens beach further north is protected by land outcrops that are birdlife havens. To its west Launceston features the large Queen Victoria Museum and beautiful Cataract Gorge. It is also the gateway to the north coast resorts where many cheap hotels in Tasmania are located and available to book on Booking.com.

One such resort is Devonport, the arrival point for ferries from Melbourne. Burnie also has a port, and is linked by a coastal road to Stanley whose narrow promontory ends in a rock called The Nut. South is wonderful Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, and to its west is the sleepy town of Strahan whose backdrop is the mountains covering south-western Tasmania.

We could have stayed another night to get another walk in, but we were on a tight timeframe to visit Tasmania. We ate at the Discovery Resort lodge both in teh restauarnt and had a takeaway the following evening. We also ate at the Peppers hotel bistro after a long walk. The shuttle bus is very helpful getting you in and out of the walks and runs like closkwork. Only a 15 minute wait between shuttles. We visisted the Tasmania Devil sanctuary which was good value for a couple of hours side trip.

Strahan is a picturesque quaint fishing village.

Strahan is a picturesque quaint fishing village. The highlight was definitely the Gordon River Cruise. We stayed 2 nights. We were disappointed that the road to Ocean Beach was closed, but we did find some fabulous views of the sunset over the water. There are good dining options for a variety of budgets, and the cafe across the road from the cruise terminal was a welcome addition. Its a shame that there weren't more shops to explore but those that we went into were very friendly.

We enjoyed the Wineglass Bay loop hike in Freycinet National Park. It was close to the weekend (Friday) so probably many more people, but we had a great time looking for wildlife and enjoying the natural surroundings. We opted for the Holiday Vehicle Pass, which was good for four weeks in Tasmania even though we were only staying a week. We spent a couple of days at Frreycinet and later at Cradle Mountain National Park, which was much less than the cost for daily park entry.

It was not yet peak tourist season so the weather was not yet great for swimming but I went for a swim anyway as it was a nice safe swimming beach, ie not a surf beach. Atmosphere in the area was relaxed and not too busy. Reasonably good super market which supplied everything that you could realistically need. A number of cafes and decent places to eat out. Friendly locals and staff. Good place to base yourself and then drive to other locations like Triabunna to go on tours to Maria Island, or Bicheno etc. I did not realise until it was too late that there was bicycle hire place, which was a pity as it would have been nice and easy area to cycle around. Gorgeous view over the water from the golf course.

Port Arthur is a very large site - when we were told to allow 3 hours I did think that was excessive, turns out it was spot on. The habour cruise (which is included in the ticket price) was informative and a great way to capture photos of the whole site.
