Lovely location on the river and a pleasant walking distance to the middle of town. We got a lovely room in the silo part. Comfortable, clean, with lovely little touches like local products. Staff were all helpful and friendly. Archie the Silo dog was such a treat to have around and the best boy! We would recommend this to all our friends visiting Launceston.

FAQs about hotels in Tasmania

Laidback Island of Incredible Landscapes

Perhaps most famous for the deceptively cute-looking Tasmanian devil, tranquil Tassie, as it’s affectionately known, boasts some of Australia’s most impressive landscapes.

Most 5-star Tasmanian hotels are in its historic capital Hobart, a beautiful city cascading down slopes towards the sea. Its highest points offer far-reaching views towards the bay’s lush islands and headlands. The furthest headland shelters Port Arthur, a former convict colony touted as Australia’s answer to Alcatraz.

Just outside the capital is Richmond, home of Australia’s oldest bridge. To the north-east is Swansea, across Great Oyster Bay from the Freycinet Peninsula, site of stunning Wineglass Bay.

Bicheno has a sweeping, sandy beach, while St Helens beach further north is protected by land outcrops that are birdlife havens. To its west Launceston features the large Queen Victoria Museum and beautiful Cataract Gorge. It is also the gateway to the north coast resorts where many cheap hotels in Tasmania are located and available to book on Booking.com.

One such resort is Devonport, the arrival point for ferries from Melbourne. Burnie also has a port, and is linked by a coastal road to Stanley whose narrow promontory ends in a rock called The Nut. South is wonderful Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, and to its west is the sleepy town of Strahan whose backdrop is the mountains covering south-western Tasmania.

Clean, easy design and laid out, comfortable, access to all amenities. Reception provided all information and was very helpful. Staff in the dining room always smiling and were happy to assist and the chef /s were excellent (many meals here) the cleaners were very friendly and were very personable -even though they were busy with the tour bus rooms. It looked like everyone was happy in their role and wanted to be on site. All up couldn’t as for a better team. We felt very welcome.

The location of the Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel is excellent, close to the wharf and easy walking distance to shops and restaurants. The staff were exceptional! They went above and beyond to accommodate all our needs. They were able to move us to a two bedroom apartment from a one bedroom, when we had another family member join us. This was a last minute request and the hotel was very busy.

Hobart a hidden secret,it’s out of the way for most international tourists but if you visit you won’t have any regrets. The city is so walkable ,it’s cosmopolitan but it’s also international. The world class Seven mile beach golf course just opened ,it’s special,up there with the best in the world and within 18 months or so the second course,Five mile beach will come on stream making this a must play golfing Mecca. Under half an hour from Hobart, well done the Goggin family! Only 3 hours north is another World class golfing Mecca,Barnbougle with its 3 international quality courses plus a short plane ride to King Island and 2 more exceptional golf courses,Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes. Tasmania and Hobart will become a must place for golfers to visit.

City Park was a beautiful place to have a leisurely walk. The variety of well-preserved historical buildings observed as you walked through the city streets was something I'll remember. Plenty of eateries to be found which ever street you entered, with the Plough hotel serving excellent counter meals.

This is a great area for hiking and bushwalking.

This is a great area for hiking and bushwalking. Be sure to check the weather before you go, as it can be very cold—even in summer. When we visited on Christmas Day, it was actually snowing, despite it being summertime in Australia. Make sure you dress warmly and bring appropriate layers. The area is quite open, so the wind can be very strong, although it eases when you pass through forested sections. The tracks vary, with some being man-made and others more natural, which can make certain sections challenging. Many of the tracks can also be quite wet, so waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended. There are several track options available, depending on whether you’re visiting for the day or planning to camp. The scenery is incredibly natural and beautiful, and we even spotted a few wombats along the way. Access to the tracks requires purchasing a shuttle bus ticket, and you’ll also need a Tasmania National Parks Pass.

We enjoyed the Wineglass Bay loop hike in Freycinet National Park. It was close to the weekend (Friday) so probably many more people, but we had a great time looking for wildlife and enjoying the natural surroundings. We opted for the Holiday Vehicle Pass, which was good for four weeks in Tasmania even though we were only staying a week. We spent a couple of days at Frreycinet and later at Cradle Mountain National Park, which was much less than the cost for daily park entry.
