We were glad that the receptionist waited for us for some minutes past 8pm as they finish working at 8pm. We travelled with bicycles and we could safely park then in a closed area within the hotel. All was perfect!

Romantic Region of Castles and Christmas Markets

Home to some of the world’s oldest and finest Christmas markets, Bavaria is the German region touching Lake Constance and the Austrian and Czech borders. Although evoking images of beer, lederhosen and fairytale castles, it’s much, much more than that.

Famous for Oktoberfest, its capital Munich has impressive architecture lining squares and parks, and several luxury Bavaria hotels on Booking.com. To the north, Nuremberg is a city of 2 halves: a picture-postcard old town and grandiose Nazi rally grounds housing a sensitive museum.

With a stately palace and gardens, Erlangen is on the Regnitz River which continues to beautiful Bamberg where one of the half-timbered buildings hovers above the flowing river. Bayreuth is well-known for opera performances of Wagner, a former resident, while Regensburg on the Danube River has a beautiful, medieval centre.

Unsurprisingly, most romantic Bavaria hotels are on the Romantic Road between Würzburg, with its hilltop castle, and Füssen in the foothills of the Alps. Big hotel that never seems to be big, thanks to a brilliant layout. Excellent staff, the service level is really high. Good bed, shower, room. Great Spa and Pool area. The separate family spa is brilliant, it keeps the adult only spa quiet but is not lacking in its offering. Probably the best breakfast buffet and à la carte we have had. Dinner at the hotel was really good as well.

The Location is perfect. The hotel is incredibly comfortable, spacious and clean. The rooms are spacious, with stunning views over the lake and mountains. The staff are welcoming, and the restaurants and bar areas are beautifully laid out. All in all, a wonderful experience. An excellent base for exploring, hiking, and generally enjoying the stunning area.

It was very classy and yet comfortable. Extremely clean. Incredibly nice staff. Excellent location with such a breathtaking view. I loved getting a relaxing massage before leaving and I particularly enjoyed dining at the restaurant and the breakfast near the really big windows. Every guest is made to feel very important. Perfect location in front of the Königssee. The receptionist was super kind to give us a FREE room upgrade to a very nice and newly renovated room with balcony and direct view of the Königssee. The stay was so worth it after night-shift work and the 10hr-train-travel. Love the bed and the bathroom too. Breakfast buffet.

We enjoyed Nuremberg, we were there just before Christmas so enjoyed looking around the fantastic Christmas Markets around the Old Town. There was a great friendly Christmas vibe around the City!, also visited the former Nazi Rally Grounds which was interesting.

Regensburg is delightful and affordable.

Regensburg is delightful and affordable. I visited 26-28th December, so it was cold. The views around the river are sensational. Even better if a busker is playing music on the bridge. Lots of restaurants and pubs. Great photos opportunities

We visited Würzburg for a short two-day trip just before the New Year, exploring the Würzburg Residence, the old town, and Marienberg Fortress. In the evenings, the old streets and the bridges over the Main River were beautifully illuminated and impressed us even more than the lavish interiors of the Residence. The panoramic views from the high banks of the Main overlooking the historic old town are truly spectacular. With its rich history and atmosphere, Würzburg feels like a true pearl of Franconia and clearly deserves its popularity with visitors.

The whole city is beautiful with so much history! We really loved the Rathaus square and the fountains and the Fuggerei annd the Dom. Our Hotel Ost am Ko was in the perfect location for exploring and was a real gem of a hotel! Highly recommend visiting Augsburg- has so much to see and experience. Momo’s in the Bahnhofstraße Strasse has the best Doner I have ever had!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is an amazing historic Town. The charm extends to all of their buildings which many were historically restored after WWII. Wondering the streets is an adventure looking at all the beautiful buildings. The christmas market is quaint and charming and so much fun. We spent three days there and could have easily stayed longer.

Our highlight was a visit to Schloss Seehof which we reached by bus, using the Bamberg card. Really informative guided tour of the restored interior of the castle and the gardens including an impressive water cascade were impressive.

Füssen is not a typical mountain town with local atmosphere.

Füssen is not a typical mountain town with local atmosphere. It is a stop-over for most travelers to visit the famous castles pictures in movies. Hundreds of international travelers pour off the train and proceed directly to the buses to visit the castles. Therefore, the feeling in the town is "weird." // Yes, it's a tourist town, but not upscale or posh. The restaurants are overly-priced. I saw numerous street people shuffling thru the streets and going thru the trash cans! // But, the museum in St. Mang monastery was one of the finest museums I've ever visited. // So, the mountains, museums, brilliant sunshine, Old Town architecture were well-worth a visit. However, the surreal lack of local pride and flair in the town was off-putting.

Been coming to GAP for several years, both in summer for trekking and winter for cross-country skiing. Local buses are included in your tax charge and from the train station one can travel within a day to Innsbruck, Mùnchen, Nürnberg, Ulm and, yes, even Salzburg with the wonderful Bavariacard, although it's not the bargain it once was. There is limitless scope for trekking for all abilities.

I was surprised at how much there was to see and do in this...

I was surprised at how much there was to see and do in this charming medieval town. We stayed for 4 nights which felt just right for visiting the castle, the Virgin Mary pilgrimage church, taking an afternoon boat ride on the Crystal ship, visiting the glass museum, and walking along the cobblestone streets to visit shops, art galleries, cafes, and bars. If we had more time I would have probably used the spot as a jumping off point for other local towns. We did a lot of walking to see the gorgeous views of the 3 rivers. Lots of history in this town - it was an unexpected gem.
