Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Boasting various indoor and open-air hot spring baths, Fumoto Ryokan offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with a historic charm. It is surrounded by serene greenery next to a river. Free Wi-Fi is available at the public area. I stayed one night at Fumoto Ryokan (Kurokawa Onsen) and was genuinely very satisfied. The ryokan is traditional and understated—wood, stone, soft lighting—nothing flashy, but immediately calming. There are many baths, indoor and outdoor, and you never feel rushed; you can soak as much as you like. A small wooden bridge runs through the property, and in the evening, when the lights come on, the atmosphere is quietly beautiful. What really exceeded my expectations was the dinner. I didn’t expect much, but it turned out to be excellent—on par with high-level kaiseki. The ingredients were generous and high quality: a full plate of wagyu, fresh horse sashimi, and dishes that were clean, precise, and well-balanced. In Kyoto, a dinner like this for two would easily cost around ¥150,000. At night, sleeping on tatami with the sound of the river outside was incredibly comfortable. Service was warm and attentive without being intrusive. One practical note: most people arrive via the Kyushu Odan Bus, which only runs three times a day, so tickets must be booked in advance. The ryokan can arrange pickup from Kurokawa Onsen. In the low season, it’s around ¥20,000+ per night for two, including dinner. I found it very good value—and I’d happily stay again.
Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Boasting 6 different hot spring baths, Kurokawa-So is a traditional ryokan accommodation nestled in a tranquil valley along the river. It features some Japanese-style guest rooms with tatami (woven-straw) flooring. A lot. We ended up getting a full Japanese 2-floor house, with a private outdoor onsen and a garden overlooking the nice river. I guess I wasn’t really sure what kind of room I had booked. Everything else was great, too much to mention. I at least have to mention that we especially enjoyed the private dining rooms with views on the maple leaves and the river.

The stuff was great, I had my dinners in my room and the food was amazing, especially the horse sashimi. I was lucky enough to get the Kiku room with the private bath, and that was such a luxurious experience.
The proximity to the Castle, the city and F&B. I also liked the room size and the Expresso machine. There was parking even though we had to pay for it. Some of the staff spoke English and we were able to get adjoining rooms with the children next door. Both the Deluxe and Superior rooms had a clear view of the Kumamoto Castle.
We got a room that is on its own. They carefully integrated the trees. There is a private onsen in the lower level of rhe room. Fhe place was very relaxing and you really feel rested. The private onsen were superb. We had fun trying different ones. The food is amazing.
The hotel felt more luxurious and exclusive than expected. Staff members were always on hand to greet you the moment you stepped out of the lift and were ready to assist you in all matters (early/late check-in, storing of suitcases, parking matters). I like that there was a separate lift for residents. The interior design was superb and almost feels as if I was in a traditional ryokan.
For this price, could not ask for a better stay. Location was superb.
Worth every penny paid. Even though location was uphill and out of the way, the amenities more than made up for them. I rank it the most comfortable and luxurious stay in my entire trip (and I had stayed in premium 5 star hotels prior).
Location was excellent, room clean, facilities in room excellent and staff superb
A luxurious Ryokan with exceptional service
