We are not fans of motels, but sometimes they are unavoidable and – it must be said – very convenient (especially in New Zealand). Willowbank Motel definitely took the cake, as it was spacious, immaculately clean, super comfortable, with a very well equipped kitchen (really everything you need was available, including basic spices, oils, coffee, tea, etc.) and spotless bathroom. We did not find the location just outside Kaikōura, on a main road, particularly special, but above all practical and easily accessible with our rental car. Check-in was done with a code, so we didn't meet anyone in person. Quite impersonal, but it worked perfectly and the communication in advance (and afterwards) with the contact person went smooth and extremely friendly. In short, nothing but praise!

Te Mahuru Retreat is a recently renovated bed and breakfast in Kaikoura, where guests can make the most of its garden and barbecue facilities.

We want to emphasize the extremely fine accomodation - brandnew and very tasteful interior and furnishment. We felt very comfortable and at home in Angela’s apartment. Not to mention Angela’s hospitality and extraordinary personal service: She spontaneously offered us a lift from the busstop to the apartment and furthermore took us to the point Key viewpoint, and brought ur luggage to the bus again. Angela is just adorable and a very special person

We stayed in the lodge rather than the tree houses. Fantastic accommodation with wonderful attention to detail, and great facilities such as a large spa bath, gas fireplace. Breakfast and dinner were included, and these were excellent. Great views back towards the kaikoura range, and a 15 minute walk will get you down to the beach for more fabulous views. The Lodge arranged whale watching for us, and were very helpful in answering any queries we had. Would definitely stay again.
