The hospitality and kindness of the staff really stood out to me. The staff makes you feel so welcome. They have recommendations on virtually anything you can think of—whether food, sights, or activities. These staff recommendations were nice because it shows that the hotel itself values the individuals' perspectives. The music bar was great. The aesthetic was clean and the location was fantastic because I literally walked everywhere from the hotel. The bed and pillows were some of the most comfortable I've had the pleasure of sleeping on in Japan. And the rooms were really spacious.

We booked the Suite with city view. Very nice spacious room with 3 beds. Beds are big, and comfy. The bathroom has a shower and a square bath. You almost feel you are in a 'spa'. Good tea and coffee pads. The hotel has only a few rooms with a beautiful cafe at the ground floor. You had to pick a breakfast time in advance so the table was reserved at Hid's Cafe & Bar, a popular place for hotel guests and others. Food was super healthy. Matcha Latte the best, coffee as well fabulous. Walking distance to the old town but also with some top restaurants in the street as well as izakayas near the train station.

If you can only go to Shirakawa-go once, make sure you go in...

If you can only go to Shirakawa-go once, make sure you go in winter when it snows there. Do not go in the heat of summer as you have to walk from one hut to the other under the blazing sun. There is probably no need to stay overnight either. Make sure you buy bus tickets before hand. The Internet booking is hopeless, you need to buy tickets in person.

It took quite a long walk from the bus terminal to the hostel. It is clean and tidy there as there are not many staffs. Hosts are always helpful and friendly, they ice break between guests from different countries and stir guests up to a cheerful group. You may not like shirakawago, but staying there will definitely impress you if the staffs are still the same. KenKinChi and Kenji.

It’s a short drive from Shirakawago, we had a car but it’s a long way if you have to walk. This hotel is very nicely finished and maintained, looks relatively new. There’s a very nice public onsen, indoor and outdoor baths, we didn’t try the private ones but they looked small for 2 people. Rooms very comfortable with a lovely view of the river.

Beautiful setting in the Japanese countryside and great location to visit the other Shirakawago villages. Basic but functional. Clean and comfortable except cold at night, all our other hotels in Japan provided a duvet these beds had sheets and two blankets. Social area with tea and coffee, plates and cutlery, fridge etc. All staff very friendly and helpful. Helps if you have a car. Would stay again.

I liked being in shirakawago and being able to be early morning there. I read that if you wanted to eat something late you had to bring food from takayama, this is incorrect as there's a convenience store 5min from the hotel and a supermarket inside the village.

I enjoyed my stay at Shirakawago Guest House Kei (note that I stayed in a hostel-type room with other guests). The location is quite good (not very close to the bus station, but the staff helped a lot with transfer to the station in the morning). The staff are very polite and friendly (my deepest respect and greetings to Kenkichi-san, Ken-san's father and friend!). We had a lovely long talk in the evening! Nice choice for those who want to spare some money and have a pleasant stay in Shirakawago!

I normally don't like dormitory accommodation. I had no choice as there was little or no accommodation at Shirakawago. The first night was great but the second was horrific with Gen Z revelling until 1 pm in the morning. The couple running the hostel were, however, very friendly and accommodating.

If you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience, this is it. Tatami mats, food and onsen. This was the only hotel in Shirakawago that provided your private bathroom/toilet. The hotel is located on the river - we left the window open at night to listen to the water gurgling past.
