Located in the heart of Beaufort-West, Old House Lodge is a well preserved Karoo homestead dating from the early 1900’s. Just south of Beaufort West is the Karoo National Park which stretches into the Nuweveld Mountain range. It has an array of wildlife including some of South Africa’s most endangered species. Two endangered species, the riverine rabbit and the black rhinoceros have been successfully resettled. The Park is home to five tortoise species, the most in any conservation area in the world. A fossil trail, day walks and hikes ensure an abundance of sights and activities. The Park also has challenging 4x4 routes into the mountains, walking and fossil trials. Beaufort-West is also home to the famous South African heart surgeon, Dr Chris Barnard. He performed the first heart transplantation in the world. He is honoured in Beaufort-West in the Dr Chris Barnard Museum. The Karoo area is also a very popular destination for nature lovers, cyclists, golf enthusiasts and hunters.
