The apartments Flattered to be in Tomar are located at the heart of the city, one step away from the Nabão River and with a privileged scenic view over the Convent of Christ. The architectural design, authored by Architect José Carlos Cruz, was set out to rehabilitate apartments from the end of the 1940's and restore them the dignity they once had. Tomar was founded in the mid twelfth century and at its helm sits the Castle of the Knights Templar overlooking the city and the whole surrounding region. Within its grounds lays the famous Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. During the first centuries, in the Middle Ages, the city was the Portuguese headquarters of the Order of the Knights Templar which later survived as the Order of Christ. Its privileges and wealth were behind the great Portuguese maritime ventures of the fifteenth century, which partly explains the city’s political and spiritual relevance over the centuries. The city’s historical center is a true maze of narrow cobbled streets perfect for strolling. Astonishing buildings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as memorable examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture can be admired. The Synagogue, one of the oldest in Portugal, is a must see stop. If you are looking for a place to sit back and relax while reading a book or just soaking up the sun, the city’s central park is the perfect spot. Just a few kilometers away you will find the Castelo de Bode dam, a perfect place for numerous water sports.
