David & Maria moved from Byron Bay in Australia to Eltham after they discovered the Old Eltham Post Office. The building was in a fairly degraded state but after a year and 1/2 of renovations we feel she is in a better state than ever. We don't feel like owners but custodians of a grand old lady.
Eltham sits 300 km north of Wellington and just five hours south of Auckland, making it an ideal stopover on the alternative Taranaki route. This historic town is only 12 km from the Rotokare Scenic Reserve – a stunning 230 ha, fully fenced hill-country sanctuary that’s home to kiwi, tūī, bellbird, saddleback, North Island robin, and many other rare native species.
Just west of town, the Cardiff Reserve offers a beautiful short bush walk along the headwaters of the Waingongoro River – perfect for a peaceful nature escape. On the way, stop at the Environmental Products shop, a local treasure trove of eco-friendly goods and Possum fur creations.
Back in Eltham, browse El Smoove, a distinctive store packed with genuine U.S. vintage and retro clothing – from classic jackets to rare, one-off pieces. Both spots reflect Eltham’s creative, welcoming character and make for memorable additions to your stay.
