Mohua Park : A beautifully remote, privately owned, 8 hectares of protected native forest situated 16 km south of Owaka, in the gorgeous Catlins Valley. Unlike other accommodations in the Catlins, Mohua Park provides guests with exclusive access to private walking trails through untouched native forest and opportunities to spot local birdlife right from your cottage balcony. We have four self contained eco-cottages which have solar powered hot water, low energy lighting and the ability to compost food waste. These are built in the studio style, meaning living, bedroom, dining and kitchen are combined into one open area. Mohua Park offers complete privacy, supreme comfort and a chance to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. The cottages are self-catering with small kitchenettes that are equipped with a fridge, microwave, stovetop, basic cookware (pots, pans, utensils), salt & pepper, cooking oil plus complimentary tea and coffee. There is well appointed 4 seater dining as well as cozy couches, with a seperate ensuite equipped with a shower and toilet. Outside sit and relax on your own private deck with a glass of wine or coffee, listen only to the native birds, sheep and the flowing water of the Catlins River as it winds its way to the South Pacific Ocean.
Being self contained, we advise you purchase all necessary food and drinks for your stay prior to arrival, or else visit the local restaurants available in Owaka, but be sure to pre book a table before arriving.
Check-in is available from 3pm, and check-out is by 10am. Please note free parking is available right outside your cottage.

With so much to explore in The Catlins, your experience is limited only by how much time you have to spend here. Tramp part, or all, of the Catlins River Track, and listen for the melodic calls of the Mohua bird. The track passes through mature lowland beech forest where many other native birds may be seen, plus excellent trout fishing can also be had in the river, all within a short 5-minute drive away. Walk across stunning farmland alongside the roaring South Pacific Ocean to visit Jacks Blowhole, a spectacular 55-metre deep blowhole with exploding waves and roaring sound effects , or take a stroll along the amazing Tautuku boardwalk an easy 30 minute return trail through lush native podocarp forest leading out to scenic estuary flats. Try to spot (or hear!) one of the resident noisy fernbirds. Drive the Southern Scenic route to discover breathtaking waterfalls such as Purakaunui Falls, Matai Falls and the spectacular McLean Falls. Explore stunning beaches like Surat Bay, known for its sweeping sands and resident sea lions, while Curio Bay features ancient, fossilized forests exposed at low tide and where you might also spot rare Hector’s dolphins. Don’t miss Nugget Point-just a 30-minute drive away from us-for stunning views from the lighthouse’s viewing platform. The Catlins is a haven for wildlife lovers-encounter fur seals, sea lions, and the very rare yellow-eyed penguins. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting native species like the Tui and Bellbird, amidst the beech forests.
