Monnickendam is a beautiful old town with nice terraces and restaurants. It has the oldest working carillon in the world. Five minutes outside the old center you can go to the Hemmeland, take a walk in the green or sunbathe on the beach and swim in the Gouwzee. Monnickendam itself is beautiful, but a visit to Edam and Volendam is also very worthwhile. And Amsterdam is just around the corner.
