How spectacular do you want to have it? This barn conversion is a peerless gem. Feel a VIP in a unique dwelling that not only exudes history but also has bucket loads of luxury, space and comfort. And it is a home away from home.
In our monumental cow stables we have created a magnificent home – of no less than 104m2 / 450m3 - for those extra special short-stay breakaways of at least two nights.
• One gigantic space with an aerial walkway connecting two spaces on the first floor and with views from the bottom to the top of the building,
• A breath-taking, romantic hide-away for special occasions for two people,
• A unique space that no hotel or B&B can match,
• NO other guests on the premises,
• Fully equipped kitchen and NO shared rooms and facilities,
• Site overlooking other farms, the courtyard, the adjacent orchard and the hilly landscape of Southern Limburg,
• Rural location on the edge of Maastricht, yet incredibly close to the centre – 2 km,
• Free parking in front,
• Bus stop within 100m.
Van Akenweg 80 is a grade 1 listed building and dates from the second half of the 18th century. The out building behind the main house – now La Vache Contente – dates from 1869 and functioned as cow stables between about 1900 and 1988. In 1988 the entire farmstead was officially repurposed as a residential home. As from 2011, when we bought the farm, we have done exhaustive renovation and restoration work, always aiming to retain period features. Our motto has always been: create an authentic feel of days gone by but with all modern comforts of today.
The former cow stables were revamped from the ground up between 2017 and 2020 to become a deluxe, self-catering dwelling called La Vache Contente. In the space between this and the main house a small wellness room has been created with a traditional sauna and a bathroom (use is extra).
Personally we enjoy pottering around the house and walking the dog (both of us), cooking (Gabbie) and artistic work (Peter).
La Vache Contente is located on the north-western edge of Maastricht in the Oud Caberg district. At one time this was Belgian territory and Belgium is still visible from the back garden. The short-break home is about 15m away from the – quiet - street and wonderfully tranquil. Its positioning makes it feel like a detached house. Nowadays Van Akenweg is a village street without through traffic. It simply ends in fields and farmland
Through the gate in the front wall you walk across the beautiful courtyard to La Vache Contente. Through the back gate you go into the dappled shade and the sunny spots of the gardens at the back. From there and front the home itself you can enjoy the orchard next door with its apple trees. Sometimes there are even cows grazing there. At the back the rolling Limburg landscape enfolds before your eyes. This particular area, Lanakerveld, is not only known for the Bandkeramiekers, who made it the oldest agricultural area in Europe, but also because of siege of Maastricht by the later Duke of Parma in 1579 during the 80-year War.
