“Beautiful location, straight into the warm sea whenever you want. Incredibly peaceful, but close to Shela/Lamu and Majlis if you want company. The team looking after me were fabulous.”

“The locations is a gem. Away from the HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF LAMU. There is a great restaurant next door
With delicious food and you can always pop over to Sheila (5 min boat ride) for some activity if you feel too quiet on the island 🏝️ 👍”

“Really beautiful. A haven of serenity and calm. Exceptionally kind and helpful staff. When food is requested and cooked to order it’s of higher quality than that in the luxury hotel along the beach.”

We are situated on Manda island, opposite Peponi Hotel and about a half hour boat ride from the airport. Flanked by old Baobab trees our Guesthouse gives right onto the beach while still maintaining privacy. If you are looking to relax, swim every day, enjoy good food, listen to birdsong, watch the sun set, the moon rise, go walking, sailing, explore the markets and buildings in the historic town of Lamu, unwind or just finish reading all those books you never finished, our Guesthouse rooms are the place for you. There are 2 guest rooms or you can rent the house as a whole. Our Guesthouse is set in the garden with trees to provide shade when needed. You can see the sun set every night and dine under the stars. You can visit Lamu by boat or enjoy a sunset sail in a traditional dhow. A perfect getaway!
Please note - our place is run on solar power, as there is no power on the island or ground water, this means that the water pressure is not very strong and if it is cloudy or raining (which is rare!) there may be less hot water available. However the water is generally not very cold and makes for a refreshing shower at any time! We have free portable wifi but the WIFI networks are not 100% reliable on the island, so we recommend guests also have wifi on their phones.
Welcome to Mangrove House - we are excited to welcome you to our peaceful location and hope you will find it as relaxing and restorative as we do. We take sustainability seriously and as Manda has no power or water we use solar power and rain water - this does mean no air conditioning… so if you need A/C our place won’t work for you… but if you love the sea and nature you will feel right at home flanked my the ancient baobab trees
Lamu is one of the oldest towns in East Africa - built from old stone coral rock it was a key centre for the merchants of the spice trade and with its impressive architecture and cool narrow streets, still retains a lively and fascinating atmosphere. Shela to the south of Lamu, was an old fishing village and is still home to the traditional Swahili dhow fishing boats with their large white gaffe-rigged sails. Opposite Shela, lies Manda island with a its long beaches, sunset sails and Takwa ruins dating back to the 16th century. You can also enjoy a sundowner and food at Majlis Hotel a few minutes walk away from Mangrove House or cross the channel to the famous Peponi Hotel.
