This once-thriving lake port town along the historic Tokaido Road served as the last station for westward travelers before reaching the ancient capital of Kyoto.
A number of the area’s traditional townhouses, called “Otsu Machiya,” offer glimpses into the town’s rich past.
Here sits one such machiya townhouse, which was once the residence and shop of a local rice seller. It is now being restored as a Japanese style B&B, named Inase (ee-nah-se).
While only 30 minutes from Kyoto city center, the traditional atmosphere and natural surroundings of Lake Biwa offer a quiet and comfortable stay.
