This once-thriving lake port town along the historic Tokaido Road served as the last station for westward travelers before reaching the ancient capital of Kyoto. A number of the area’s traditional townhouses, called “Otsu Machiya,” offer glimpses into the town’s rich past. Here sits one such machiya townhouse, which was once the residence and shop of a local rice seller. It is now being restored as a Japanese style B&B, named Inase (ee-nah-se). While only 30 minutes from Kyoto city center, the traditional atmosphere and natural surroundings of Lake Biwa offer a quiet and comfortable stay.

Inase is located just a short train ride away from Kyoto, but we encourage our visitors to explore the local sights, culture, and cuisine that Otsu has to offer as well. Escape the crowds of Kyoto tourists and spend time relaxing around Lake Biwa or seek out some of our historic sites.
