We are in Specchia (province of Lecce), a small and delightful typically Italian medieval village, one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy" a few km from Gallipoli, Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca and the Ionian coast with sandy beaches and the Adriatic coast with a wonderful panoramic view of the coast. Small towns arose along the ridge of the Salento peninsula, including Specchia, originally inhabited in the 9th century. It flourished under the Normans in the 11th and 12th centuries, an era that saw the beginning of an upward trend that continued, albeit with some small vicissitudes, until the 18th century. Wandering the streets of Specchia today is a pleasure reserved for those in the know. Elegant streets, flanked by imposing noble palaces and historic churches, are crossed by narrow, shaded streets. A quiet "ring road" circumnavigates the center, following what was once the line of the city's defensive walls. In the summer months, bars and restaurants spill out onto the squares and pavements, and small independent food shops tempt passers-by with their irresistible range of local specialities. At the center of everything stands Piazza del Popolo, flanked on one side by the Risolo Castle and on the other by the Mother Church, both dating back to the 15th century. Beautiful location in the countryside of Salento with a beautiful surrounding view and just 15 km from the sea both on the Adriatic coast and on the Ionica not far from Otranto, Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca.
