Mountrothe House is situated in the beautiful Kilkenny Countryside on a working farm and offers visitors a charming and relaxing experience and has a rich history. Built in 1765 as a midsized rural Georgian residence by Richard Rothe, he was related to the Rothe Family, who were a wealthy merchant family from Kilkenny City. The house was then owned by Sir Thomas McKenny who was Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1819. The house was used as a ‘Safe House’ during the War of Independence 1921 and the Civil War – 1921-22 with Eamon de Valera staying at the house during this period. The House has been lovingly restored and sensitively modernised into a luxurious self-catering house for families and friends to stay and celebrate special occasions. The rooms are generous in size with period detail throughout and has the versatility of spilt accommodation. The house can comfortable sleep 16 guests, the seven bedrooms are all en-suite, spacious and unique, three bedrooms are located in the basement and retain their original architectural features including the vaulted ceilings. The house has a large fully equipped kitchen with an original AGA converted to electric. The dining / living room is adjacent to the kitchen.
