Horas Family Home is located in one of the most popular parts of Tuk Tuk. Within 5 minutes walking distance you will find 8 restaurants with menus varying between pure local Batak food to Western vegetarian. Within the same distance you find a vegetable and fruit shop, a grocery, and various souvenir shops.
Reportedly Horas Family Home has the best kitchen in Tuk Tuk, but we only cook for guests actually staying with us.
The perfect rather cool, but not too cold, climate gives you the opportunity for a relaxing, refreshing time away from home in a mountainous, rural, safe and quiet place.
Horas Family Home caters especially for families with children and small groups of friends, ideally 4 to 6 guests. Horas Family Home includes free fishing in our pond, swimming, kayaking and free use of the Horas Family Boat and a private sundeck at the Lake.
One of our major attractions for children is that we have rabbits, chicken, fishes, cats and dogs. Of course you are most welcome to enjoy for free the produce of our organic vegetable garden. Take your pictures of our Orchids and other flowers. Horas is the place for bird and butterfly watching.
We like to do things as natural as possible and operate our property almost as a closed full circle system. We don’t consider water hyacinth as a menace but as a treasure grove which we harvest from the Lake and grow in our ponds. The good things about water hyacinth are that they have really beautiful flowers, provide an excellent hiding place for small fish, provide natural water treatment and last but not least it is perfect for composting.
Compost being one of the key elements for our organic gardening. The produce is freely available for our guests. The green leftovers are food for our rabbits, and after processing their food the rabbits produce excellent waste for mixing with the compost. Of course the bunnies are always ready to be cuddled by our younger guests.
Most of the kitchen leftovers end up as food for our fish and the fish ending up on the BBQ. Guests are allowed to fish in our fish ponds and catch their own catch of the day without any charge.
The most interesting of Tuk Tuk / Samosir is that we are located in the middle of the largest and deepest fresh water Lake in South East Asia. The Lake filled the crater of the major Toba Vulcano Eruption some 75.000 years ago.
The people living around Lake Toba call themselves Toba Bataks. They are unique in the sense that they have a different origin than the regular Sumatrans and they have their own language and culture. The King’s Tomb in Tomok and the Stone Chairs in Ambarita highlight this culture and are popular destination for guests visiting Samosir.
Reportedly, at Horas Family Home we have the biggest variety of Orchids in one place in North Sumatra both in hybrids and species. Guests, interested in Orchids, are welcome to help and assist our staff in their normal daily activities such as, cleaning, splitting and repotting orchids. By quite a few guests this has been referred to as a Free of Charge Orchid Treatment Class.
