Agava Lux Rooms&Pool

The Agava is designed and built by the Mišerda family. Originally from France, their Croatian roots began in the 19thC, when a French soldier named Michel was returning home with the rest of Napolean's army. On his way, he fell in love with a beautiful country girl who lived in the rugged hilly region behind Split that was then known as the Poljička Republic. Delighted with his new wife and the natural beauty all around him, he decided to stay forever in Croatia. Since many locals had a hard time pronouncing his name, they started to call him Misherd, which in Croatian is spelled Mišerd (the accent mark over the s is pronounced shuh. Adding an a at the end of this name let's everyone know a person with this name is “of“ the family of Mišerd). For many decades the Mišerda family has been highly-regarded as one of the best construction firms in Dalmatia, responsible for the development of many new hotels and the restoration of others as well as cultural institutions here.

In addition to our hotel on Babina Street, we also have created a 4 star Agava Lux rooms annex building, also in Varoš, on Križeva street, inside of an 18th C building. The view from the upper floor windows here really give you the feeling of Varoš the red tile rooftops, hand cut stones, the bell-tower of one of the famous ancient churches here. The original stone walls that we carefully exposed and restored inside the Annex are more than 300 years old! Swimming pool is at Hotel Agava, 5 minutes walking from Agava Lux rooms. For all guests swimming pool is free for use from 08:00-22:00 h (8 am - 10 pm).

Varoš is characterised by its warren of narrow and stone streets called kala. This neighborhood was originally home to the Split's fishermen, who moored their small boats at Matejuska, the little inner harbor on the western side of the city's waterfront promenade, the Riva. As you walk these cobbled streets, past churches, twisting alleyways lined with wonderful stone houses, you will notice the streets go progressively uphill. This is because Varoš begins at the foot of Marjan Hill, the “lungs of the city“, a beautiful large park, with ancient hermitages, places to hike and bike and even swim. Križeva street, where ourAgava Annex is, is named after the church of the same name here, Sveti Križ, originally built in the 15thC and later remodeled in the 17thC and 18thC. Today it is protected as a cultural landmark.The church has a fascinating legend, a story which says that fishermen, after a tiring and extremely stormy night at the sea, found a cross that floated—and when they approached the cross, it was bloody.Today, this same cross is still on Sveti Križ's altar as a witness to ancient times.
