According to Chilean tax law, all Chilean citizens and foreign residents must pay a 19% VAT (Value Added Tax).

This surcharge can only be avoided for FOREIGNERS when payment is made exclusively in USD (US dollars) IN CASH (damaged bills are not accepted) and a valid passport and immigration card are presented.

Payments made in local currency are not exempt from this tax. Payments made by credit or debit card, as well as any payment in Chilean pesos, are processed through a machine subject to VAT, therefore it is not possible to avoid the tax using these payment methods.
