The Big Red Barn offers the best of both worlds — a peaceful rural retreat only 25 minutes north of downtown Whitehorse. Located just 10 minutes off the Alaska Highway and set on 22 acres, the property is surrounded by trees for privacy yet opens onto wide, unobstructed views of the sky and landscape.
Our location is one of the Yukon’s most popular areas for aurora and night-sky viewing. With no light pollution to the north, guests often enjoy the northern lights directly from the property during clear winter nights. In summer, the midnight sun lights up the fields around the barn.
The Big Red Barn sits just off the North Klondike Highway, near the historic ‘Marge of Lake Laberge.’ The drive is easy and fully paved, offering quick access to Whitehorse while still giving guests the space, quiet, and natural beauty that the Yukon is known for.
Guests can choose between two fully private apartments inside the barn: a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom unit, each with a full kitchen, private bathroom, and comfortable living area.
Travelling with pets? Only our one-bedroom apartment is pet-friendly. Please contact us before booking to confirm availability for your four-legged family member.
Hello from Krystal and Greg. Hosting has been a part of our lives for many years — first at Cabins Over Crag Lake, and now here at The Big Red Barn, where we’ve lived for more than three years. Long before we settled on this property, we also published Yukon, North of Ordinary magazine (2007–2025). The magazine painted the picture of the Yukon for readers around the world, and although it has ended, the North of Ordinary spirit lives on in our two retail shops in downtown Whitehorse. Guests staying with us are welcome to enjoy a discount in our stores.
Our children are now young adults. They aren’t here full-time, but they’re still very much part of life on the property, along with our small menagerie of animals. We love sharing this peaceful corner of the Yukon with travellers and are always happy to offer local tips — from scenic drives and favourite viewpoints to the best ways to enjoy the northern lights.
We look forward to hosting you at The Big Red Barn.
Step off the property and you’ll find quiet walking trails, rural roads, and trails that lead toward the Yukon River. Our neighbourhood offers peaceful forested areas, wide-open skies, and the kind of space that makes the Yukon feel expansive.
We’re also just down the road from the Yukon Grain Farm, a local working farm where residents and visitors can buy fresh potatoes, carrots, and beets nearly year-round.
A short drive brings you to Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, and Bean North Café — three favourite local spots for wellness, wildlife viewing, and great coffee.
