I fell in love with the wild west coast of Tasmania a long time ago. During a decade or so living overseas and I kept dreaming about Tasmania and finding a little bolt hole to hide away in. Somewhere enchanting but close to nature. Somewhere to rest, recharge and reset. I found my little piece of paradise at Lettes Bay and in the Salt Box Hideaway and was so enchanted I wanted to share it with other like-minded travellers who I know will fall in love with Tasmania's west coast as much as I have.

The handful of waterfront, heritage-listed shacks that are nestled together, were built in the early 1900s. The land was given to the hard-working employees of the Mt Lyell Railway and Queenstown Mine to boost morale with workers and their families. They were encouraged to enjoy time together, fishing, swimming and making memories. We hope you get to make some wonderful memories of your own. Your hideaway is tiny (20sqm) but well equipped with board games and a smart tv to keep you occupied when the weather gets a little wild on the west coast. But the best thing to do is park in front of the large window with a glass of wine and enjoy the unique view across the bay. Watch the mists roll in and the sea whip itself into a frenzy. When it's calm, you won't believe how stunningly beautiful it is. It's hard to tell where the sky ends and the water begins, the reflections are so clear. Enjoy a tranquil dinner around your own fire pot with our fold up outdoor table and chairs ready and waiting for you.

Many visitors aren't aware of Lette's Bay's quaint surroundings and interesting history. The handful of waterfront "heritage listed" shacks that Salt Box Hideaway is part of, were built in the early 1900s. The land was given to the hard-working employees of the Mt Lyell Railway and Queenstown Mine to boost morale with the workers and their families.. they were encouraged to enjoy time together, fishing, swimming and making memories. Over time the men assembled "shacks" built with leftover material from the mine and railway yards. The shacks are all nestled in the same hamlet, with just a few lucky ones enjoying total waterfront positions. The shacks are quite close to one another but those that live and come here as holidaymakers or weekenders are always respectful of privacy and your right to enjoy the beautiful surrounds. We therefore ask that you do the same so we can all enjoy the magic of Lettes Bay.
