Taupo is 40 km from the hostel. Best place I stayed in all of New Zealand!! Sandra is incredibly kind and helpful. Riverstone was a great base to wait out the weather to hike the tongariro crossing. The place itself is super clean and cozy, and has a nice patio to enjoy the sun and a well equipped kitchen.

I had a booking in the afternoon and went there directly. When I book a hostel, I always look for a bed with a curtain because I need privacy when I sleep. The bunk bed is comfy! The room size matches the number of guests (maximum 6 people). There is an ensuite bathroom in the dorm, but there’s also a central bathroom as well. It’s really clean! One thing I love the most is how functional the central bathroom is — there are two hangers and a shelf for my belongings. This is always a problem in some hostels because I never know where to put my clothes, towel, and shower set. The staff are really nice; she explained all the areas to me. The kitchen is clean too. I think it was almost full because I went on a weekend, but it wasn’t chaotic like many other places. If I have a solo trip to Taupo, I will definitely book this hostel again.

Taupo is an absolute mecca for all things outdoors – including hiking the famous Tongariro crossing, trout fishing, skydiving, jet boating, white water rafting, mountain biking and sailing on the Great Lake with the hostel's yacht 'Fearless'. Great backpackers. Love the sleeping pods. While we shared an area with strangers, we had our own privacy in the pods (unlike other backpackers and bunk bed styles). Will definitely recommend to family and friends.
