The location in native bush overlooking the ocean is phenomenal. I think some of the average reviews here are based on misplaced expectations. The facilities here are simple and "eco". The retreat runs mostly on solar energy and a bit of natural gas. The water is rainwater. The toilets are composting and a short walk from the main cabins. Some people might find these things off-putting, but we loved it all. The short walk down to the ocean through the meditation garden is such a nice touch and we also enjoyed the morning guided meditation. Shambhala really is one of the gems of Golden Bay and a labour of love for the owner, John. We'll definitely return.
