My party of 5 total stayed only one night when hiking the Magome to Nagiso section of the Nakasendo. Proximity to train station and Nakasendo trail was the original selling point, but we fell in love with the place as soon as our host toured us around. It feels like staying at an artsy bed and breakfast, except you provide the breakfast and you get the entire place to yourself. There's small, delightful touches of personality and hospitality every where you look. We did not want for anything. Our sweet host met us at the front door to enter data from our passports and then gave us a walk through of the building. Two toilets and two showers was perfect for a group of 5. Fridge and other kitchen appliances work great. We listened to the CD disc player on the wall while reading the books and it was a lovely experience.The futons were placed very thoughtfully according to our parties needs. In addition to the trail and train station, there's a grocery store, a historic bridge and a cafe all within a couple minutes walk. The patios were a great hang out spot and we saw monkeys near the river around 7am. Honestly, I wish we had stayed longer but our plans dictated we move on. Next time we will try to book a few more nights so we can explore the area more!

Unbelievably comfy space, all traditional japanese style.

There are large sofas and a big TV in the lounge area, making it a perfect place to kick back and relax after spending a day on the ski slopes or hiking the trails. As someone whos stayed in over 50 accomodations while backpacking latin america and currently making my way through asia- guest house kura has to be one of my favorite. The guest house has all the feeling to it that you’d hope to experience on a trip to japan. The most beautiful combination of traditional Japanese architecture, paper walls, sliding doors, single pane glass windows, a garden in the back, Futons on the floor. Beyond the physical aspects, though, marina and momokas presence are what make the guest house exactly what it is. It feels more like a family than place you sleep. Their warmth and presence of sanctuary seep into the days that you’re there, and before you know it you’re saying goodbye not to strangers. Thank you for having me, and if not nothing else next time I’m in Japan I’ll return to Nagano solely for guest house kura
