The host was super sweet. She will make sure you make the best of your time in Gifu. I didn’t have much of an itinerary so she voluntarily made dinner and brought me to a mountaintop onsen. She will fuss over you like a mom would. I had a mosquito bite and she was so stressed! Her home was also very clean and comfortable. She made a wonderful breakfast for me before I left. This stay was one of the best memories of Japan and I hope to stay here again. Oh and she is very easy to contact with. She speaks minimal English but is very efficient over electronic communications. She also offers to drive you from to and from the station. I really can’t say enough good things!

There were very nice dishes, glasses, coffee cups, etc. The bunk beds were comfortable and the drapes for privacy were a plus. We went for a sake tasting down the street which was simple but nice. We really enjoyed our stay here and would love to come back and stay longer. If you’re eating in town, you must make reservations!

Takayama City, Takayama
In the centre of Takayama, Hostel Fish in a River provides rooms with free WiFi. This 1-star guest house offers a shared kitchen and full-day security. Private parking can be arranged at an extra charge. This place is so wonderful! It lies in a residential area not far from the city center of Takayama, thus it’s quiet in the night — and I slept really well in a comfortable bed. Everything was always clean and the kitchen has a lot of utensils in case you feel like cooking yourself. If not, Taku, the host, has a lot of recommendations for good meals around town. And hikes (!) if that’s your thing. He made my stay at this beautifully thought-out and crafted place truly worthwhile, arigatō gozaimashita.

Stayed here twice. Yumiko and Suguru were both so kind and helpful throughout the stay – they were great hosts, always sharing snacks and night-time chats with me. I'm so thankful for their care and hospitality throughout my stay. If you like interacting with locals, and finding out more about Japanese craft and culture, stay here! It's a beautiful, restful home.
The location, the place and the host. Location wise, it is not very close to the highly touristy spot but just within a few minutes walk away. It allows to enjoy a quiet and peaceful morning without missing out on the experience of the old town Takayama. The homestay is very clean and aesthetically pleasing too. I personally really liked the mini garden outside, a nice spot to enjoy your morning coffee. The host is also very responsive and accommodating. We even helped us get back the stuff we left behind. Highly recommended!
Comfortable and quiet. The host was so polite and helpful. He recommended us some good restaurants and brote us to the bus station in the morning because the bus was not running due to Japan’ golden week! Great host!
Great Host, facilities and comfort! Very good
Lots of space, quiet area, nice view of mount Ena. Great host! He went at great lenghts to help us book a restaurant in town on a busy evening. And helped us again, when train troubles had us delayed. Again, thank you so much. We can also highly recommend the restaurant reseveration.
The guesthouse is a beautiful 110 year old traditional wooden structure. The futon was very comfortable, all the facilities were great, and the room was spotless. Assi was a great host. I'd recommend Guesthouse Shigi to anyone visiting the Kiso Valley!
Great hosting, amazing Japanese breakfast. Great location near the market etc.
Clean and cosy homestay, the host is very friendly in ensuring that I am taken care of. He has a simple map which indicates the nearby to-go location, for example, 7-11, Onsen where locals go to.
