The owner, Tayeb—whose name literally means “good-hearted person” in Arabic —might as well have been named “Human Golden Retriever.” From the second we walked in, he treated us like long-lost cousins finally returning to the homeland for a proper feeding…. even if those cousins happen to be one slightly sarcastic, grumpy Egyptian with an identity crisis and one extra-white American beauty from upstate New York who had never set foot in Egypt before. And then there’s Luciana, objectively the cutest dog in Upper Egypt (don’t argue with me), along with a few rescued cats who’ve clearly decided they own the place now. As animal lovers, my wife and I basically ascended into heaven. The man doesn’t just love his animals; he’s out here rescuing neighborhood strays like some Upper Egyptian Avengers initiative. If kindness was a profession, Tayeb would be a tenured professor. The house itself? Pure Nubian beauty. He designed and built it twenty years ago with his friend, back when he was still deep in the tourism world. The place is basically an art gallery pretending to be a home. Murals on the walls, handmade furniture, artifacts and trinkets everywhere. You don’t just stay there; you browse it like you’re in a living museum curated by a man powered exclusively by hospitality and tea. When it was time to leave, we hugged goodbye like brothers torn apart by the cruel winds of travel schedules. It already felt like we were leaving family behind.
