I really enjoyed my stay, it was a completely different experience than other places I've stayed in Japan. The area has a slightly spooky, Alabama-esque feel. Maybe it was becouse of the goat outside my window, maybe the American-style buildings, or maybe, aside from meeting the lovely owners once at check-in, I didn't see a single person during my one-night stay. The room was clean, the bed very comfortable, and the air conditioning worked flawlessly (as did the Wi-Fi) a big plus for the fridge in the room (there are no shops at the area, I recommend buying some sandwiches etc earlier). It was the cheapest option I could find in the area, a bit pricey for the standard, but considering the spooky vibe (which I liked), I can't really complain. My destination was the Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, and it was a 30-minute walk. It's about an hour's walk from the train station. It's also a 15-minute walk from the coolest old-school samurai-style restaurant I've ever been to.

Stunning view of the five peaks from our upstairs room. Kind and attentive host who made calls to restaurants for us. Also lent us towels to take to an onsen. Super practical. The glass art by Hideki on display in the common room also happened to be exhibited at a cafe in Takachiho where we went after Minami-Aso

We had an amazing time and evening with them and the other guests. We also were helped out with a vegeterian dinner since the restaurants nearby did not offer such an option. Our unexpected highlight of the trip!

I had such a wonderful stay at this guesthouse in Aso. The host is incredibly kind and welcoming—it truly felt like coming home. The house itself is a beautiful traditional Japanese home, full of warmth and charm, and everything was spotless and comfortable. I instantly felt at peace here. If I had more time, I would have loved to stay longer. I will definitely come again and hope to stay at least a few weeks next time. This place has a special, calming energy.
